BDV of Transformer Oil

04/07/2011 12:40 PM

I am having one confusion about BDV of transformer oil. Usually oil with BDV=28-29 KV is considered ok. But my question is if the transformer rating is 132KV/66KV in that case also BDV value = 29KV is ok or is there any IE rule for BDV of transformer with different KV rating???

There's no confusion here. Just use the correct oil. Unless........

is acceptable?

According to IEEE Std C57.106-2002, there are different breakdown voltage values depending on the voltage class of the oil-filled equipment. For a 132kV transformer, it falls smack in the middle of the range of 69kV-230kV, for which the minimum BDV is 28kV (ASTM D1816-97, with 1mm electrode gap). I would rate that oil acceptable if I were receiving the test results.

BDV OF TRANSFORMER OIL (As per IS 6792:1992)

The oil sample is subjected to a steadily increasing alternating voltage until breakdown occurs in a BDV test kit. The breakdown voltage is the voltage reached at the time of the first spark appears between the electrodes. The test is carried out six times on the same cell filling and the electric strength of the oil is the arithmetic means of the six results obtained. The electrodes are mounted on a horizontal axis with a test spacing of 2.5 mm. The value should be:

Electric Strength (BDV)

Vide IS 1866:2000,

30kV - for Voltages upto 72.5kV

40kV - Above 72.5kV upto 170kV

50kV - Above 170kV up to 420kV

Dear Guru,

Thanks for providing a good answer.

But on 7th Apr why you have taken my question as a joke?

& replied perfectly on 8th Apr????

Anyway, thanks again

Dear Sir, Please take a close look. On 7th it was not me, but M. Slack, who had answeredyour query. I answered your query first and only on 8th April. I do not play jokes on people who are sincere to learn.
