Any difference with API pump vs ANSI pump?

04/08/2011 5:52 PM

Is there anybody can give me some criteria for what situation I should choose ANSI pump rather than API pump?

Thanks.

Choose an ANSI pump for any application that does not require the superior performance, testing and reliability of an API pump.

I would say use an API pump for anything in HPI (Hydrocarbon Process Industries), where API ought to be specified in the first place, and use an ANSI pump for anything else. In certain non-HPI applications an ANSI (or ISO/DIN) pump would perform better than an API pump anyway.

Instead of asking others to spoonfeed you, perhaps you could purchase a book.....like the Pump Handbook and read about the differences for yourself.

Or.....you could contact a local pump vendor and discuss the differences.

I suggest that you always purchase an API-610 pump...for all services

A pump handbook might not always tell you the practical differences (In terms of performance vs. cost on real applications) between an API-610 standard pump and a chemical (or other) standard pump. Too often in the past people have asked for an API-610 pump because they thought they would be getting a better pump. There are many applications where an API-610 pump would be precisely the wrong choice. There are even instances where ANSI B73.1 or ISO5199 pumps are not as good as older (not to any standard) designs. Just because API-610 has more pages and more editions doesn't necessarily mean it is best for all applications. It was developed by API (American Petroleum Institute) specifically for pumps used in Hydrocarbon Process Industries. So it is foolish to suggest purchasing an API-610 pump for all services.

This would be a good time to get to know your pump supplier. They can, at least, start you in the right direction.

And AP#1 has given poor advice here. There's no reason to buy more pump than you need for any application.

For the most part I agree with Lyn in response #1. To be able to answer you correctly, we need to know what exactly the pump in question will be used for. You may need an end suction pump, or a better choice may be a split case design. The more information you provide with your request, the better answers you will receive.

In any case the effeciency of the pump in the given application is very important. Who would want to use a pump/driver combination that is 70% efficient at the design point, when another pump/driver combination with near 90% efficiency is available.

Give us more information and we can help you better.
