Electrical Panel Inspection

04/11/2011 11:18 PM

Dear friend,

A new question regarding to panel wiring inspection, after we finish panel installation and wiring, we need to inspect them.

To do this, as I read from several standard books that we need to disconnect all the wiring from equipments to do the necessary tests.

Do you think it is suitable? Could you (electrical inspectors, gurus) let me know what you will do at this stage?

Upon completion of a new panel install, the extent of our testing is verify conduit/connector bushings are in place, tightening torque of all conductor nuts/bolts, amp probe line and load conductors, conduct IR (Infrared) imaging of panel with loads energized (turned on), make sure panel schedule is accurate and complete, clean tub and replace cover.

Record all findings/results on customer supplied form or create your own.

I have never heard of disconnecting all wiring after installation to do necessary tests.

Inspections should be ongoing throughout the fabrication process and may include any level or depth of inspection. The depth of inspection depends on how critical the panel's design function might be. If a failure might affect other equipment to the extent that it may be damaged or cause an unsafe condition, then the highest level of quality control should be employed. If the panel's only function is to provide circuit protection for lighting, then a simple visual inspection of component layout to match design drawings and checks for terminal tightness might be all that's necessary.

A more in-depth inspection might include verification that cable size and insulation type meet design input. Crimped and soldered connections are made correctly, and terminated on the correct lands. Switch, instrument, and indicators are the type and rating specified...etc.

I think first you need to clarify what you means by "electrical panel". Do you mean a circuit breaker panel, a residential load center, an industrial control panel, a panel that came on a piece of equipment, what? It makes a difference.

dear,

At the time of carrying out the H V Test , you need to disconnect all the control fuses, instrument supplies.

Rest you don't require to disconnect.

An inspection of the actual panel in an industrial or commercial setting would include short circuit, protective device coordination and arc flash testing. Available fault levels would need to be obtained. Fault levels would be used to determine the worst case fault level for main switchgear and all assocated panels and sub-panels.

Arc flash calculations would include magnitude, device clearing times, arc duration, arc boundaries, working distances, incident energy and PPE ratings for service.
