Need Solenoid Valve

04/12/2011 9:53 AM

Need Solenoid Valve that is similar to this,

http://pneuaire.com/lowwasu34wav.html

In pressure capacities, and power requirements.

BUT!

it needs to be compatable with NH3, which that one is NOT.

Can anyone help me?

Joe

Interesting challenge. I am familiar with "industrial size" ammonia solenoid valves, quite a bit larger than this. I presume that the plastics and elastomers are the sticking points for this example.

Carbon steel, stainless steel, Teflon®, and neoprene are NH3 compatible; most copper alloys are not. I doubt that a Teflon® body could handle the possible pressures, but am unsure (and might not be available even as a custom design).

This doesn't fully answer your question, but maybe it can be a start. Best of luck. Such a valve would be handy for sending samples to an ammonia detector, for instance. If I can find anything, I'll post further.

Could you rebuild the valve with compatible o-rings/seals? I know we tear apart brand new hydraulic valves/pumps/motors and switch the seals depending on the fluid requirements. Many of the pumps are not offered from the manufacturer to be compatible with some of the fire resistant fluids, but we get seal kits and reseal them to work.

That is a possibility.

I know anything like copper based copper, brass etc. is an absolute no no.

But what is good for NH3? and what seal parts are good for it also?

I have 4 companies that come to mind.

1) Ingersoll Rand, ARO division. They make many designs, within these designs, there are many more variations. www.ingersollrandproducts.com

2) Clippard pneumatics is involved with small designs. www.clippard.com

3) Asco red hat valves. They are older than dirt, and seem to cover many variables. www.ascovalve.com

4) Whitey valves, by Swagelok. I have some air operated designs that work with 2500 PSI, and have teflon seals and 316 stainless steel hard parts. www.swagelok.com/products/valves

Good luck.

Hello NSS. Ammonia is still used in commercial refrigeration. You can try the refrigeration control companies like Danfos, Emmerson Climate, Alco, etc (disclaimer). In fact I believe they recently sent a tank of ammonia to the ISS.

Good Luck!
