Is it Possible to Standardize the Generator Transformer Voltage??

04/12/2011 9:59 PM

I want to ask, is it possible to standardize the generator transformer voltage?? For say a certain class of generator.

In our place there's difficulties on parallel work on the transformer and, since the generator transformer is various in voltages.

So is it possible to standardize it, or the generator transformer voltage just follow the generator manufacturer voltage??

Thanks,,

best regards

Sure. What should the voltage be, who gets to decide, and who pays the enormous cost of trying to get every other existing system in the entire world to match that?

I mean, generator transformer design is specific right? Follows the generator design. So it's unique. What's make one GT specific to other. Is there something to do with the material? Vector group??

Ahh, Utopia! The ideal world, where everything fits together, works together and engineers are all retired.

Dream on……

Heu, I just want to know, is there's any standard or code about it? Or we can just freelly design our GT voltage based on the generator manufacturer. While the operation people demand standardize voltage on the GT.so they can easily interchange the GT between unit. Is there any special restriction? Or it's just the same with other power transformer 150/20 kV on the switchyard, which can be easily moved to other 150/20 kV substation

Usually the customer (buyer) specifies the generator voltage he wants, from a common set of voltages that the generator suppliers can provide. They don't just choose a random number. It may be 11kV, 13.8kV, 20kV, but not just any voltage.

The transformer is then specified to connect that generator voltage to the grid / transmission voltage.

If you specify your generators consistently (say, all at 11kV) then all your transformers can be the same, assuming the generators are all the same MW capacity as well as voltage. Otherwise if you want transformers to be interchangeable, some may have more capacity than the generator to which they are connected.

so, you're saying that the generator transformer design is the same with other power transformer. no special design, as in the transformer is for generator. my manager said that generator transformer is different from the other transformer. but i think it's the same, just different on the primary voltage. so, i'm curious is it really the same design with any other transformer. if so,, we could set the standard voltage. for example : < 10 MW, 6,3 kV 10 - 50 MW, 11 kV > 50 MW, 13,8 kV my problem is, i still cant find the engineering justification for that. any other opinion?

Wao, Can you be a bit more specific as to what you really are asking?

#1 What is your present voltage/amps(KVA/KW) from your present utility and transformer?

I have 19200 3 Phase Primary, 2500KVA Transformer, 480 3 phase secondary @ 3200 Amps. I am limited (we're in the woods). Next step is a substation if I need more amps and that is in the works as I need more amps for the next expansion. We also run 24/7/365 currently on 2 1000KW rental gen-sets in parallel for back up power as we await our 4X500KW permanent gen-sets to arrive in June with the switchgear for paralleling. 2nd expansion will require either a substation if our utility can't supply more so we enter into Co-Gen. (New trick for old dog)

So, please supply a bit more info on what your situation is and what you really need to know and maybe we can help.

Re: Is it Possible to Standardize the Generator Transformer Voltage??

okay..

we have several power plant , for example

  1. Plant A : 2x7 MW w/ gen.transformer rating of 6.3kV/20kV
  2. Plant B : 2x7 MW w/ gen.transformer rating of 10.5kV/20kV

people from operation thinks that, how come the voltage rating of the gen.transformer is different. while the plant capacity is the same. they said that The voltage rating of the gen.transformer should be the same if the plant capacity is the same. when it's different it's gives difficulties on interchangeable the generator transformer. so we need standard on the gen.transformer primary voltage.

but, we're from engineering, have different opinion. Primary voltage of the generator transformer, depends on the generator manufacturer. we cant make limitation voltage of it.

now my question, is there any particular or specific design for generator transformer? that scientifically explain. why we can or can standardize primary generator transformer voltage.

thanks

Generator transformer voltage only depends on the generator voltage. If whoever specified the generators in your plants with the same voltage, you would have been able to buy 4 transformers all the same. A generator transformer is a transformer, plain and simple. It's not electrically different from a transformer used for a different purpose, such as to supply a mill or factory.

If the same engineer specified both your Plant A and Plant B, then either: 1. He made a stupid choice when he switched voltages for Plant B's generators; 2. He didn't care about interchangeability; 3. He got a very good price on the later generators or transformers even though they did not match the earlier ones; or 4. He got a bribe from the generator or transformer vendor when he specified the second plant to buy their voltage units.

If it comes down to interchangeably, then it's down to bad design & lack of forethought.

Heh, if you think about it, ALL transformers are going to, at some level, be connected to a generator!

it is always just what people need from time to time.
