HIC/SOHIC Cracking

04/13/2011 8:09 AM

Is it possible to have HIC / SOHIC cracking when the H2S partial pressure is LESS than 0.0003MPA (0.05 psia), noting that H2S content is GREATER than 100 ppm Mol or Wt%?

Secondly, is it possible to get HIC / SOHIC cracking in gas phase (wet H2S gas; i.e. small amount of moisture present)?

Theoretically If partial pressure of H2S less than 0.05 psi, that is not possible , but there are other influencing factor such as H2S source and water content.

Second, it is possible HIC/SOHIC in fluid service H2S.

i am sorry, i answered on the same subject but i didn't take into account the value given as partial pressure (0.05 psi) which is absolutely as you mentioned & referring to NACE standard too, corrosion by H2S can't happen theoretically even with water traces.

carbon steel can be used if H2S partial pressure is less than 0.05 psi & CO2 partial pressure is less than 30 psi & considering that composition could change during depletion of reservoir so it is common to apply corrosion monitoring & chemical compounds sampling & analysis by at least yearly rate.

exceeding 0.05 for H2S, some CRA material shall be selected to deal with expected sour service conditions.
