Generator LCI

04/14/2011 12:23 AM

Ours is a 9FA gas turbine, in which for initial cranking we are converting the generator into synchronous motor with the help of load commutated inverter. In generator mode, neutral will grounded with NGT & NGR via. disconnector 89ND. But during motoring mode we are opening the earth disconnector 89ND. what is the reason for that? during motoring & generator mode what will be direction of rotation?

Do you earth the star point of a normal motor? Running as a motor no earth is required.

Direction has to be the same as generation.

In normal case, motor & generator rotation is different. But here how it is satisfied to rotate in same direction?

If you run the turbine and gen set up to speed in reverse and then try to start the turbine forward, what do you think the results will be?

Or are you looking at the input / output of a gearbox?

If it is run as amotor, the direction of rotation is selected by interchanging two phases. Once cranking is terminated, before exciting as generator, the phases are resynchronised etc before connecting to the grid.

As Tony said, the grounding of the neutral is not desired in motor mode. It might signal a fault if properly protected in the motor mode.
