Well the Websters dictionary defines Ethernet as the following....

Ether - the upper regions of space

net - an open-meshed fabric twisted, knotted, or woven together at regular intervals

From what I remember from US politician Senator Ted Steven's explanation of the internet (which Ethernet is a part of) it is a 'series of tubes'.

So, Ethernet is an open-mesh mess of tubes orbiting the earth!
