Waste to Energy Technology Wanted

04/20/2011 12:22 PM

Looking for efficient, eco-friendly, and proven technology to turn municipal waste to energy. Preferably already in use in Europe. This is for Greece facing a pressing problem with landfills. Your suggestions are greatly appreciated. Best regards.

For starters, have you searched? There's only a few thousand good sites to choose from.

Hi Lyn,

This avalanche of sites and information is my problem. I wonder whether I could get distilled down info from a friend who is knowledgeable and has done the rounds.

Many thanks,

Chris

I don't have any knowledge that would help you.

But, there may be someone here who can. Just check back periodically.

Cheers.

The City of Fargo, ND has a methane collection system at the landfill. This link shows the energy produced by a small wind turbine at the landfill, solar collectors, and the generator. The information is sort of sketchy, but the numbers are impressive for the landfill serving a city of about 100,000 people.

The engineer at the site is an associate of mine. He is responsible for most of the development, and is usually cooperative with other municipalities that have a true interest in development of their own generating capabilities. If this is of interest, private message me, and I will try to arrange some sort of exchange.

I suggest visiting http://www.novo-energy.com

Well proven, with multiple commercial-scale WTE systems in operation in US. More than 20 emission control systems operating in Europe.

Actively pursuing opportunities in European markets. Would be interested to learn more about your efforts in Greece. Happy to provide feedback about our experience in the market.

Best, PS

There are a number of conversion technologies but gasification systems are proving the cleanest, most efficient and most flexible in their output. They are cleanest in the output which is easily scrubbed to produce at emmission levels below natural gas. These systems produce syngas that can be used to run electrical generators or be converted to bio-fuels depending on the quality of the syngas. Gassification systems vary in their ability to handle the wide range of feedstocks and vary in their relative efficiency and reliability. Plasma arc and fluidised or moving bed technologies have about the same output quality. Plasma arc may be less efficient and is considerably harder and more expensive to maintain. The most promising technologies use a heated medium like sand or ceramic pebbles to pyrolise feedstocks and produce syngas. Check out www.concordblueenergy.com or www.rentechinc.com

If you are looking for a larger, commercial type waste conversion, by all means, look at gasification techniques. There are several available and Germany and Europe has considerable experience with this type of conversion. However, if you are looking for a waste conversion that is economical, proven, and practical for an individual citizen, home owner, or farmer to consider, I suggest you look to biomass anaerobic digestion (aka AD). You can find considerable free information on biomass AD on the DOE/EERE, EPA, and Dept. of Agriculture. There are also many non-governmental websites available; simply type the key words, from "anaerobic digestion", "biomass digestion", etc. into google and you will find hundreds of hits. BTW, one of the best home biomass digester I have seen comes from China and costs about ± $2,000 complete and ready to install. It is 2.5 square meters volume, portable, and will handle anything from home and garden waste and grass clippings. The technology has benn used in China since before WWII and is well proven.

My firm has a gasification plant that we can install at no cost. I would like to speak with you in detail about our option. Please email me at <email removed>

dabrownsr,

Please please first review http://chtank.org, then find CHAPS-SEProjects and review. Next, find Jessee McBroom, the CEO of Distributed Energy Systems, <email removed>, and introduce yourself and discuss your offer with him.

Next, review APIX-SEProjects and follow through. Also, within the next year, I will have collected the data and resources and will have revised HARP-SEProjects in order to make a presentation to the Mayor and City Council of Houston, Texas, followed by offering this same presentation to other city councils and communities throughout the United States. But in the mean time, I have a serious back surgery problem to be completed. I am 78 years of age and supporting both my wife, myself, and my work with chtank.org on my Social Security and medicare only. King George (Bush) saw to it that my retirement savings was totally depleted before he left the throne.
