Metal Core PCB on Copper

04/09/2007 11:49 PM

I need to find a source that can manufacture a small run of MCPCB's on a 1/16" piece of copper. The piece needs to be 8mm wide and approx 50mm long. I'm mounting two three watt LED's on this piece, so the board layout is very simple.

I can reflow the small quantity I need to mount, but making the boards with a Dremel tool and other such devices has become tedious.

Does anyone have any suggestions?

Thanks!

Where are you located? How many pieces? What cost? answers on a post card as usual.

Not sure what you mean by answers on a post card.....

I'm in the metro Phoenix, AZ area. Fifty pieces. I'm looking for the cost to see if it's something I can afford to do right now.

This is just an expression. Look for people advertising in hobbyist mags Electronics. Not so sure of those in the US but try Wired? There are plenty of ways the pros use silk screen and acid etch. I use dry transferes for one off's and ferric chloride to etch.

Why etch? Caledon Controls Ltd. has PEC inks (printed electronic circuit) that allow you to make complex multilayer structures without drilling, plating or etching.

These inks include a Thermally Conductive Dielectric which can be printed on aluminum and over printed with a solderable silver conductive ink.

Ask your local sign shop to make your PCB's!

make metal core LED engine boards from two cans of ink!

ask your local screen printer to make up aluminum substrate pcb's using ink from Caledon Controls Ltd.

Thermally conductive dielectric ink on aluminum followed by solderable silver conductive ink and the PCB is done.

What Is a Metal Core PCB?? Most PCBs I am aware of are copper over fibreglass (or whatever). I conceive of metal core being one big short.

A metal core pcb is basically a big heat sink. There is a layer placed on top of the metal that isolates the circuitry from the metal core. It allows you to use thermally sensative devices without always having to use a seperate heat sink.

Hello Bill,

I was looking for the Metal Core board question that one of my customer had asked, and I found your blog. I figured you might be intrested n this information.

I am a Prited Circuit Board manufactrurer and wanted to send you the link to my site for your information. If you have any Printed Circuit Board needs, feel free to contact me.

Thanks,

Dave,

It was actually me that was looking for someone to manufacture a copper core pcb. I wound up having the people in Taiwan where I was getting my LED boards and drivers made making them for me. The difference in price between what I could have had made here in the US on a small run and what I was able to get was unreal to me. These were single sided boards with connections for an LED. Everyone I spoke to state side wanted a ton of $$ to produce just a few samples. Most places I spoke with wouldn't even make a single surface board over a 1mm thick copper back. I was amazed.

I appreciate the info.

Those people in Taiwan, who are they? I've been building dynamo-driven LED bicycle lights with premounted LEDs, aluminum stock, epoxy, and perforated circuit board, I was hoping to make things a bit neater and more compact. I am, however, completely new to this, except for owning a copy of Eagle for designing PCBs.

Metal core PCB fab can be as simple as printing inks.

Caledon Controls Ltd. offers kits to make metal core PCB's as well as other "Printed Electronic Circuits" materials allowing economical manufacturing without the need for drilling, plating and etching.

Thermally Conductive Dielectric inks with high conductivity rating can outperform laminated aluminum in many cases.

Next time ask a local screen printer to make your PCB's on aluminum for you.

Hi,

What was your experience with the Taiwanese supplier? Would you be willing to share the supplier name and any plus/minuses in dealing with them?

Thanks,

Rick

Not if you print a thermally conductive dielectric ink atop the copper or aluminum!

Caledon Controls Ltd supplies printed electronic circuit inks to make complex PCB's on metal substrates without need to drill, plate or etch!

Costs are also reduced since the inks are applied selectively in an all additive process which a local screen printer can do.
