Halon Substitute

04/21/2011 12:50 PM

Would inert gas Inergen (IG-541) or Argonite(IG-55) be a good agent for use in closed and manned spaces such as substations and control rooms instead of the existing total and automatic flooding Halon system which is being phased out ? Contributors comments welcomed.

Yes, both are acceptable options for manned spaces. Also FM-200 and NOVEC are acceptable options. I would suggest one of the latter because they are stored at 360 psi. Inergen and Argonite are stored at many times that pressure. They require heavy walled cylinders which make initial installed cost much higher. Also since they are stored as a gas, more cylinders are required. Environmentally and cost conscious types would opt for NOVEC.
