No, it is not top secret.

The answers to your question are within the pages of your textbook. Or, do you have some answers you believe are not correct?

There's a lot on generator hunting in Google... http://www.google.com/#q=hunting+in+generators&bav=on.2,or.r_gc.r_pw.&fp=f26a11cf684416b&hl=en

Do you have a specific scenario that is causing operational problems or is this an essay question? The more details you provide the more focused the answers will be since this is a question that covers machine theory, control system tuning, transient analysis and power system engineering, to name a few.

You could start by answering the following:

Isolated or system connected generation?

Type and size of prime mover and generator?

Type of governor/AVR- archaic, mechanical, electrical, modern?

Type of load- intermittent, erratic, non-linear, random, etc.?

Type of hunting- frequency (speed), voltage, load stability?

It could be as simple as a governor and/or voltage regulator that needs tuning, or as complex as harmonics generated by a reciprocating engine creating undamped resonant oscillations in motors/loads.

Hunting may be associated with

1. Winding Failure,

2. The AVR failure/ malfuctioning,

3. Problem with the tacho/ encoder feedback; if the generator is provided with one.

Causes: dirty fuel (water is the most common problem), clogged fuel filters, dirty air filters, injectors not set up correctly (diesel engines), engine oil needs changing and engine flushed, AVR not reacting to voltage droop (not drop). There are more... but these are the simple one that you can id quickly and rectify.

Effects.. all above will/can cause hunting.

Solution: Maintanance
