XLPE Cable

04/22/2011 3:55 AM

Hi everbody,

In medium voltage ( 34.5 kV , 22 kV or 11 kV ) ıf we change cross section of the XLPE cable from 3x( 1x95/16 mm2) to 3x( 1x120/16 mm2) or capacitive reactance will increase. And also it isn't same for overhead lines. Do you agree with me?

In addition to this in LV or MV how can we calculate the cross section of XLPE or NYY cable? If we measure the radius of cable without PVC part of cable which formulas must we use to calculate the cross section of cable?

What's your opinions?

Best Regards,

Musa UÇAN

Well you've out done yourself, that makes even less sense than your last question

I dont know of capacitive reactance in XLPE. I will explain cross-sectional area and diameter with house wiring cable. We buy stranded cable with 1mm^2 or 1.5 or 2.5 right. Now in 2.5mm^2 we have around 35 strands each 0.3mm in diameter. So each strand has an area of (0.15x0.15x3.14)=0.07065mm^2 So 35x0.07065=2.5approx.

Dear TonyS,

I have been working in a water treatment system in İstanbul Leather Zone for 6 years. This system was establisted 21 years ago.

In this area H2SO4 injures all the system ( PLC cards, soft starter, electronic cards etc. ). Now theres no writting about cross section on this cable's PVC .

However we have to replace this cable in a short time so we have to determine cross section of this cable by using measuremet and calculation.

In addition to this, last question and this first question todat are about my homework about master program. I investigated earth fault protection for embedded generator paralled with grid.

This may come as a strange concept to you. But has it occurred to you to look at the cable terminations? A good engineer would tell you at a glance.

You can't tell a cables composition by O/D!

dear,

Cross section of any conductor of any voltage grade of cable is the "compacted cross section". Not the area of stranded conductors added together.

Simple language, You crimp the conductor by Copper Lug. Cut the lug in cross section at the crimped spot. Then measure the area of conductor.

This will be the cable size.

Sorry but crimping a lug reduces it's CSA. As the crimp is compressed it extends in length slightly.

I found out the hard way, the perfectly cut 500mm cable was to long for the terminals after crimping!
