Power Factor & Generator...

Dear friends,

I have one small doubt..,

Power factor depends on type of load used, correct..?

If correct, why manufacturer of A.C generators mention power output in Watts....?

Normally rating of power supply source is expressed in KVA. If someone expresses in KW then he must also express that what power factor should be to get that power.

There is actual load and indicated load. generators are rated at actual capability.

dear,

Function of Generator is to provide 2 out puts - (1) Voltage & Current - By alternator

(2) Electrical Energy / power - i.e. KW

by Engine - mechanical energy in to electrical enegy by engine.

Function (1) is expressed in KVA, where Power factor is mentioned @ KW

Function (2) is expressed in KW as usal

I think most consumers are more used to and capable of considering the load they have to power in terms of watts.

Dear friend ,

Your answer is already available in your question. They specify the KW to choose the correct KW capacity generator depending up on the actual power factor of your load. To make it more clear the designer should consider the actual power factor of the load to select the correct KW and KVA rating of the generator

So that you don't overload the prime mover - which is always rated at HP or Watts.

I am not a big expert but KVA would be more accurate and fair if you ask me. I can see most of the manufacturers use KVA on their new products instead of simple KW as before. KW refers only for a linear loads while KVA is more "dynamic" and includes power factor in the math. Simply, if the Power Factor φ=1 → KW=KVA. I hope the explanation above will help.
