MTBF = Mean Time Between Failure
How long before the part will break and not perform its function anymore.

MTTR = Mean Time To Repair
How long it takes to perform maintenance and repair the part.

www.acronymfinder.com is a great website - it even covers most government acronyms.

How long before the part will break.

It's a little more subtle than that: the MTBF of a 20 year old (person) is about a thousand years. In other words if you looked at a population of say 10,000 over a period of a year, then you'd expect 10 of them not to make it.

(The statistics are not accurate I'm trying to describe the principal.)

Randall,

A point well made. It shows how important it is to define the statistics that we see splashed about so carelessly on our media.

For engineers, another common term which is used by the military etc. is serviceability. This has nothing to do with "ease of...." but actually is an indicator of whether the product will be capable of reasonable use on a particular occasion.

That is how many days in its design life will the product - vehicle say - be available for service - use.

The aircraft industry need very good control of this because the ability to fly a plane is not the same as a plane which has no service issues / maintenance outstanding. If one seat will not adjust, it needs attention, if one engine will not run, it grounds the plane.

So let's make statistics accurate:

"10 of them not to make it and there are 50% chance that a least 2 of them will drown in a river that has an statistical average depth of 30cm."

MTBF and MTTR is use same base of reliability engineering method of system failure rate calculation
