Motor Frame Size

04/27/2011 8:37 AM

Dear all,

for the motor frame size i have choosed as per IEC/IS standard.in that Small, medium, large mentioned with frame number. my question is what is the difference between s,m & L.and if we choose one size higher than standard frame what will be advantage. is there any relationship with frame size & Motor efficiency.kindly advise me.

regards,

Generally S,M,L denotes the general length of the motor.

Motor length is sometimes changed as necessary to accommodate changes in wiring for motor RPM. That keeps frame size the same.

S, M & L in motor frame size designation stand for SMALL, MEDIUM & LARGE. It relates to the core length of the motor. Yes! Definitely there will be variation in efficiency. Taking lead from one of your othet posts, let us take the exampe of a 11kW Motor.

As per IS 12615,

11kW, 3000 RPM motor - Frame Size 160M; eff1 - 90.5%

11kW, 1500 RPM motor - Frame Size 160M; eff1 - 91.0%

11kW, 1000 RPM motor - Frame Size 160L; eff1 - 89.7%

11kW, 750 RPM motor - Frame Size 180L; eff1 - 88.1%

As you can see, between 160M & 160L, there is a marked difference in efficiency. Longer the frame, lesser will be the efficiency. Understandable, as longer the core, the core area & hence the core losses will be more; hence, efficiency will be lesser.

Hi Electricalexpert65, you get a GA from me, I have never bothered to look at the variations of frame size as to efficiency, but thanks for the in-site.

Cheers

The difference between S, M, L is the distance between the foot holes. Frame size having S has smaller distance between DE to NDE foot holes where as L has the largest distance between them. There is absolutely no relationship between frame size and efficiency.
