2006 GMC Sierra Truck Electrical

04/27/2011 9:55 AM

Just bought a used 2006 GMC Sierra Pickup.

When I turn the key off, the radio stays on. I thought that was odd until I had a passenger get out and when he opened the door, the radio shuts off.

Can someone tell me what to look for in the drivers door that would cause the radio to stay on?

I am assuming there is a trigger to the body control module that needs to be checked.

Does opening the driver door have the same effect? If yes, then all is well.

GM designed the vehicle so that the accessories will work for 10 minutes after it has been turned off, or until you open a door. After 10 minutes, the windows will not work and the radio will power down.

Thanks Mark.

As I recall, the inclusion of the RAP (Retained Accessory Power) relay depends on what options the car has. The windows may only go up, but not down, the power seat may or may not work... but I think the radio power is included in all. And I think the radio station recall feature does not work in some models.

The windows will go both ways in my '02 'Burb after the key is turned off. However, the "one-push" feature of the driver window for toll booths, etc is disabled when the key is off. Any door opening will de-activate the RAP.

My '05 V-Dub has a an interesting feature. The presence of the key in the ignition (or a timer) is what determines the RAP, whereas in the GM vehicles it's a timer or any door opening function to disable the RAP.

I will time test it. All I know for now is the passenger door will shut it off, but the drivers door will not.

Your drivers door should turn off the accesories as well. Does the dome light come on when you open the drivers door? If not and you have the dome control set so that it comes on when doors are open you may have a bad switch in the drivers door.

The door switches may be bad. Another very common problem is the ground wires going to the switches may be loose or corroded.

An update for those looking at this thread....

The drivers door switch is bad. It is built into the door latch mechanism. I have a stripped down version of vehicle (fm radio only option) and the replacement part is $170. Guess I won't be fixing that any time soon.

What ever happened to the $10 switch.

37,000 miles on vehicle, 5 years old. Hmmmm. I guess GMC knows how to put the K in Kwality.

Wow, $170 bucks?

LynDoor™ Auto was only charging $22.85. No wonder we went bust!

This guy is still in business... is this the correct switch?

I had a similar problem with a Toyota van. The door switch didn't work. (...in the winter) The radio would stay on and the dome light didn't come on. In the summer all was OK.

Your Ford doesn't behave this way? What year?

At work, we have two Ford pickups, 2007 and 2008 I think. Both of these have the RAP feature. These are base trucks, so crank windows, manual seats... but the radio plays until I open the door. I have never sat in one long enough for it to time out, so unsure about that.

It's old like me. '01. Does most everything else. I don't doubt the new ones do.

Thanks all for your answers. It appears to be a door switch. The dome light does not come on either.

Thanks for the plug, bob c. I am sorry to say the Auto Parts division of LynDoor™ Industries has experienced quite a slowdown. We have repurposed the warehouses and delivery vehicles towards a more promising enterprise:

So, we have nothing to pitch this guy... unless he is tired of the truck!

Just an outside thought. Because work trucks sometimes sit for long periods of time with the driver's door open, they have started to include a switch that defeats the driver's door jam switch from activating the interior lights. I think it is attached to or adjacent to the headlight switch. Does your truck have that switch? Could it be that simple?

Re: 2006 GMC Sierra Truck Electrical

Yes, it does have that switch. I tried that, not to say that that could be the problem, however, one would think that the radio would still shut off when the door was opened. This leads me back to the door switch itself, and GMC parts dealer has told me that the switch is built into the door's lock mechanism. Cost of that part is $170.

If I had a wiring diagram for this vehicle, I would bypass that (Less than Kwality part) with a generic, drill a hole in the door frame switch, and make do with that.

Other option is to just live with the fact that the radio will stay on for ten minutes.

Re: 2006 GMC Sierra Truck Electrical

I do not have access to the wiring today, but GM has used white as the wire searching for a ground in order to complete the circuit for interior, or foot-well lights for years. Another wire that should be at the door jam switch is the wire that completes the "key in ignition " buzzer. I don't remember that color. If the switch is not on the body itself, they will provide a ground wire. That should be black. I think that you are now down to only 2 wires to wonder about. Use a jumper with a low amp fuse in it to ground out one of the unidentified wires. If you have the key in the ignition, when grounded the buzzer should sound. If it does not, check the radio operation. Good luck.

How about it, anyone have the color codes for a similar year GM door switch for this friend?

bob c, I think I found something.

According to this discussion, there are three wires; black, and two orange:

GM Tech (Cam) : Ok, then start by checking the wiring at the switch. The thick orange and thin orange should have power all the time. If they do not then you have a power supply issue. If they are good then check the black ground and see if that is the issue.

This troubleshooting discussion may be a big help for our friend. Hope so.
