Dissimilar Metal Weld

04/28/2011 4:04 AM

Hi all,

Could anybody let me know the main characteristics of the dissimilar metal weld? I mean, to avoid the dissimilar metal weld is better than similar metal weld in case of construction and manufacture of Pressure Vessel?

I would like know the shortages and storing points of dissimilar metal weld in the view of material science.

Let me give a example, dissimilar metal weld between Carbon steel(SA516-70) and stainless steel(SA240-304) would be fine? Otherwise, what is the good means to avoid dissimilar metal weld in case of joint between Carbon steel and stainless steel?

Thank you for your time to post sincere opinions.

Good luck all.

Yes is posible, you need a WPS/PQR:

For any non-welders (or wannabee welders, like me) trying to follow along:

WPS: Welding Procedure Specification

PQR: Procedure Qualification Record

I'm guessing that the chart in the previous post lists various types of metal across the top and down the side, and you find the needed procedure (or a reference to it) at the intersection of the row and column for the two metals?

The chart lists the preferred filler metal for joining different grades of carbon steels to stainless steels.

I blew it up, but it isn't suitable for publication.

Generally, using equivalent or higher grade stainless steel as filler material is recommended.

Milo will know, and I'm sure there are guides on the web.

Thanks! Not a big problem, but I'm interested in learning more about welding, and explaining the acronyms and explaining what I should see in the chart (but couldn't because of the size) would have been more useful to me. (Or a link to that chart.)

regards!

There are process requirements and the desigener's economic design considerartions lead to involve dissimilar metal joints in plant piping. These are well accepted joints and well quilified procedures to develop welding procedure specifications. But history has revealed that poorly finished dissimilar metal joint are pron to fail and needs timely inspections.

In pressure vessels, cladding is normally done on the base and then final weld by the similar metal joint is performed. Care should be taken to keep carbon content balance in weld, HAz and parent metal. Carbon shift in this type of joint can lead to failure of joint in short duration.

As mentioned by Whitephone, Post #1, yes welding of dissimilar metals is possible, taking into consideration that all WPS(s) and PQR(s) must be carried out under the supervision of AI (Authorized Inspector).

advantages of dissimilar weld:

1.we can connect two diff materials of diff strength..so we can minimise the cost.

disadvantages:

the weld is not of uniform strength.

the joint formed with ununiform microstructure..

can u put some more information regarding SA516-70 with SA240-304? like thickness,grade...

Welding of stainless (304 example given) to carbon steel is often done with 309, a higher Cr deposit, to avoid the Cr depletion in the grains by carbide formation at the boundaries. The resulting deposit is harder than a whore's heart, so put it where you want it! 322 and 347 have also been used but are pricier than 309.

drbob,

Is that a medical term for a cardiac condition, or is it a welders term for really really hard?

the latter. I ruined a couple of grinding discs on one deposit I had planned to grind smooth. I suspect the Cr carbides at the grain boundaries, which still form with high Cr filler metal, but don't over deplete the grains themselves.
