Laser Etching or Printing a Barcode onto a Silicone Bracelet?

04/29/2011 12:25 PM

I have seen some nice flatbed laser etching equipment at trade shows. One unit was making custom luggage tags, but could do just about anything, and even had an attachment to rotate stock.

I think these units can be used to print or etch those silicone wristbands, but wonder what it would take to etch or print a bar code onto one of these bands?

I am also wondering the average life of the printed image and if anything can be done to increase the durability..

I've done some googling on my own... While there is sooo much information.. there is also so little..

A friend of mine is in the market for such equipment and asked me some questions... leading me here.. Thanks!

I would suggest you get in touch with any or all of the top three in this field. Each of these do CIJ (Continuous Inkjet) coding equipment as well as laser marking equipment (and others). The ideal equipment will depend on many factors, such as the nature of the substrate (silicone in your case), the required speed of application, the required durability, the required size/nature of the printing/coding, quantity, cost, etc, etc. But they can guide you on this. The range of inks in CIJ is very diverse, and the also the range of applications in laser marking. Contact: Videojet, Domino Printing and Markem-Imaje. There are also many smaller companies that manufacture or distribute such equipment. I can see that it could be a bit of a minefield if you do not know what you are looking for, but there are plenty of specialists about in marking and coding.

I searched "wrist band" on each of the company web sites with zero results among thousands of product applications..

I'm sure there are people with more specialized experience.. I will dig a little deeper. Thanks!

I'm not surprised, wrist-bands are small change compared with the hundreds of thousands of applications their equipment is commonly used for. You might do better to search for the same substrate, such as silicone tubing (billions of metres printed each year). Or better yet, consult a marking/printing specialist such as this .

If the markings were actually etched into (rather than just printed on) the surface, I'd expect them to be very durable.

However, as has been suggested, it would be best to contact the equipment suppliers.

I think so too..

I guess it's a matter of looking at what equipment the current people customizing these bracelets are using.. then asking questions to the manufacturers of that equipment..

... sounds like work..
