ATMEGA 8515 Microcontroller Application Usage

05/04/2011 5:04 PM

I see alot of websites with microcontrollers ATMEGA 8515 in particular. The schematic is for a temperature controller, it looks simple to build. My question is, will this work with an 8515 new out of the package, or do I need a computer program to run it? I didn't know if these schematics online are for factory settings in the 8515 or if I have to program them in first. Any help is greatly appreciated. Thanks, JR.

The 8515 is a general purpose microcontroller so it won't be pre-programmed (unless it is built into a specific product for sale). The program code may however be available for download off the website as part of the example applications, however you will also need the associated programming hardware to compile the code and get it into the microcontroller.

Do you have a link to the application (I could not find the temperature controller schematic in the ATMEGA 8515 manual off their website).

In a Google search using the exact wording, ATMEGA8515 projects, within the first 2 or 3 picks you should find it. There is a list on the site for projects, temp indicator and temp controller. The temp controller is the one I want to do, but I am not that computer savvy to do all that. I just like building stuff. Thanks for your help, JR

This appears to be what you are talking about

http://www.avrprojects.info/avr-projects/ds1820-temperature-controller/

The complete program code needed to be uploaded into the microcontroller to get it to work as a temperature controller is also included on the same page. You will need to use a computer to program the microcontroller, but as long as you have the hardware to do this it isn't very hard. Application and programming guide data sheets are also available off the supplier's website that can assist.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Microcontroller

http://www.atmel.com/dyn/products/product_card.asp?part_id=2006

If this is too complicated or you plain just don't want to play with software (I wouldn't blame you) there are many other projects (including temperature controllers) that you can build that do not use microcontrollers, just simple hardware and op-amps.

Are you also user 'JR' who asks

Can someone tell me, will this temp controller work with the 8515 out of the box, or do I need some special computer program to to make it work? Thank you.

Be honest.
