What I The Benchmark For Number Of Unit Trips Per Year For A Gas Turbine Combine

05/05/2011 12:15 PM

I am posting this question from Ghana. I work for a power utility company and want to benchmark our operations to the best industry practice.

We are currently in a discussion towards the signing of a performance contract. We have few issues which is still opened and need to be closed by May 11. One of such issues is the aggregated number of unit trips in a tariff year. Per the agreement, Unit Trip means a shut down of the Unit so that it ceases to deliver Active Power in circumstances where the associated generator circuit breaker opens for any period in respect of which no notice has been given.

The power plant consists of two Gas Turbines with associated Heat Recovery Steam Generators and and a Steam turbine.

I can't answer the question directly, but I can pass on a word of caution. In the 6 years I have working in the same type of plant, the majority of our trips had NOTHING to do with the plant (other than the electrical protective equipment doing the job it was designed to do), but the conditions on the grid. Make sure your agreement spells out something to cover you in these cases.

One unplanned trip of a gas turbine is as hard on the equipment as 600 planned trips. I can't answer your question, but you will certainly want to minimize these "unplanned" trips.
