Appropriate Product for Impulse Line Testing

05/09/2011 7:59 AM

Hello All,

I'm looking for the right product to conduct impulse line pressure testing on pressure instrument installations in industrial plants. I've been searching for the right portable pump possibly with a reservoir buy have been unsuccessful so far.

If anyone can provide me with a manufacturer, model, website or any information which would help I would be grateful.

Thanks.

Here is one example of a manual pump test gauge setup. There are others in various configurations and pressure ranges.

The item shown is an instrument calibration/test pump, the hydraulic version of these will work but there are disadvantages;

1. Because of the limited size of the reservoir the impulse line would need to be filled first in many or most cases.

2. because of the small through put of these pumps the number of strokes required means that much more time is taken to pressurize an impulse line and more strokes also mean more wear on the pump. These pumps were not designed for this purpose.

How about an air compressor on wheels and a Wally Box?

Impulse line pressure testing, not calibration.

The wally box is great for instrument calibration but for a pressure transmitter ranged 0 to 1000 psi on a system operating at 700 psi it will not provide the 1.5 x system operating pressure required, neither will a portable compressor.

Then how about one or more nitrogen tank(s) with a pressure regulator?

A pressure washer with a PRV across the pump from inlet to outlet can be used for a pressurized water (or glycol) source to test piping systems of most any size, once they are filled and vented. Hand pumps work fine for usual length impulse lines. Chevron had a 5 gallon oval section can with a hydraulic hand pump on top used to fill impulse lines where they need isolation from the metered product. Pumping glycol into each impulse line in turn will clear hardened product from the line. Sorry, I don't remember the manufacturer.

The nitrogen bottles are quite cumbersome and much more expensive.

I found this unit from a supplier in India

http://www.hydronengineers.com/hand-pressure-testing-pump.htm

It seems to be a good fit, it's relatively small and can be easily mounted onto a trolley and I can get a model with 15000 psi output.

Can anyone say if they've seen something similar from US manufacturer?

Thanks.
