Generator Exhaust Through Steel Ceiling Bushing Material

05/09/2011 11:04 AM

Greetings All,

I am tooling up to install a 200KW generator in a 20' sea/land steel container. I have received the blessing from the Cat Power Systems Engineer (gen-set manufacturer) for this installation.

I have worked out all of the particulars but am having a difficult time with the exhaust pipe penetration. I plan on adding a 3" diameter by 24" extension with rain cap on the existing exhaust pipe (also approved by the Cat Engineer).

My issue is the penetration through the steel container. I am going to core a 3 ½" hole through the roof of the container. I would like to fabricate an insulation bushing around the penetration between the container shell and exhaust pipe extension.

I am not trying to weatherproof the opening but only trying to give it a clean, finished appearance and trying to avoid having the exhaust pipe extension from coming into contact with the container shell while running or while in transit.

The prime mover is a Perkins 1106D-E66TA - 6CYL Turbo Charged Diesel with a critical exhaust silencer. I was told by Cat that the temp of the exhaust pipe where it will exit the container will be "around" 1300F at 50% load.

Cat was not able/willing to offer me any suggestions for what type of material to use and the current set-up is not configured with a through housing exhaust.

Any ideas what type of material would be suitable for this?

Thanks in advance for your help and guidance.

A ventilated wall or roof thimble installed according to your local code. This is the piece designed especially for your application.

I am surprised the CAT dealer didn't carry one, let alone tell you what you needed.

Thanks Pete - I will look into the thimble.

I tried to Google before I posted the OP but did not see anything that I thought would be suitable but what do I know, I just a sparky!

I am surprised the CAT dealer didn't carry one.....

I certainly am not surprised. If you have a spare couple of hours I can relate many "stuff ups" that CAT technicians have made on engines. both on fishing vessels and ashore.

I found that CAT have (or used to have) terrific teaching materials in the way of slide programs, student notes, lecturer's notes, books, videos, etc.............I only wished that they had taught their technicians with those materials.........they then may have not made so many mistakes and damage to their engines and ancillary equipment.

a bellows expansion joint would be more suitable.you can weather proof the container as it takes care of thermal expansion and vibrations.

At lease now I know what to ask for as far as the product name.

I will look into the bellows as well.

Thanks again!

The other way to go is a chimney from a the likes of a slow combustion stove or similar. You have the outer skin and its flashing to create your seal and to protect the inner flue from making contact with your 'building'.

You could go with a double pipe- pipe in pipe design without contact.

Keeps sound and vibrations down.

Hi, interesting project.

We run 2 diesel test beds for our engines (aircraft engine development project) and had the same issue. We didn't solve it but just flanged the exit thro the roof of the container (we reinforced the container roof with a thick oversize flange welded to it). We've had no problems in 3 years of running up to 150 bhp on a 2.2 litre engine. Our exhaust temps are "similar" but of course the local pipe temp will depend on the amount of heat conducted away by the flange etc.

Hope this helps.

cuba_pete's roof thimble is most of the answer. Adding roof flashing and a storm collar will give a neat appearance and keep rain out. Here is one source for equipment designed to do you need.

How is the engine cooling being handled? If you are including a radiator, consider moving it back a few inches and having the exhaust discharge in front of the radiator. This way the radiator fan will blow the hot exhaust away from the container. The penetration into the radiator duct will be inside the container envelope.
