Heat Treat Scale then Levelling

05/13/2011 1:23 PM

We are making LA steel plate, A516-70. Normilization is at 1650 degrees F, time is dependant on gage.

After normilization there is a natural scale on both surfaces. The problem is when we send to re-level a great majority of the surface scale gets rolled into the plate surface. Present scale removal is just with plant air and blow down the surface.

Our leveller is a a Cauffiel which has enough force to actually put a slight radius into a four (4) inch T plate. However the first pass is low load and the plate is blown down at the leveller exit. The remaining scale is rolled into the plate surface on the second, third higher load passes.

I recieved approval from the CEO to attempt a single plate with a high load on the first pass to attempt to break up the scale to powder.

Am I on the correct path?

Thanks

Ron

High-pressure water jets are usually used to clear scale from rolled plate.

A couple of concerns from a production standpoint (not an ME) -

Is the plate still hot when going through the leveler? Wondering what effect the water would have on the hot plate???

Care should be taken when applying all that force on scaled plate - it will transfer and eventually embed in your rolls on the machine.

How wide is the plate? do you normalize them 1-off, or production line style? If on a conveyor system, put two opposing roll-brushes (top & bottom) to mechanically remove the scale prior to levelling.. Apply pressure as required with a takeup..

Well the rolls i tested to an HRC of 55-57.

No its a cold leveler. Plate width is around 96".

Thanks
