How To Test ESD Floor?

05/14/2011 8:13 AM

Anyone here used to work with ESD floor? It is special floor made up by ESD tiles.

As my understanding, ESD floor is there to protect Electrostatic discharge. So, the floor may require a special kind of testing. I don't know the procedure of tiling, but if it is combined by piece of tile? Do we need to test every tile before tiling? And then do we need to recheck the overall floor?

Since you did not provide enough information as to what kind or where your floor is, it's hard to guess exactly what type of testing is required, so Google to the rescue...

The site is a virtual education in ESD flooring. Hope it helps...

A bit more on that is the ESD floor uses in clean room application. I have tried that link already. Tks.

ESD flooring is manufactured and installed in India by one of the group companies of AET Flexible Space . . . . for more information on the subject - you may contact Mr.Rassiwala through http://www.flexiblespace.in/

Effectiveness of ESD floors are measured using conductivity meters. Occupants of this ESD equipped areas must wear booties with conductive strips underneath to minimize and avoid buildup of static electricity. It is an expensive way of controlling static discharges, since any movable/portable equipment used in this area must also have conductive casters to ensure continues grounding, thus avoiding static buildup!

ESD STM7.1: Floor Materials-Resistive Characterization of Materials provides test methods for measuring the electric resistance of floor materials before installation or application and for evaluating and monitoring materials after installation or application.

ANSI ESD STM97.1: Floor Materials and Footwear-Resistance in Combination with a Person provides a test method for measuring the electrical resistance of floor materials, footwear, and personnel together, as a system.

ANSI ESD STM97.2: Floor Materials and Footwear-Voltage Measurement in Combination with a Person provides a test method for measuring the electrostatic voltage on a person in combination with floor materials and footwear, as a system.

There's more to it than you might be aware of and it's good that you are asking.

BEFORE the floor tiles go down, there's even more that needs to be done. You need to directly consult specialists who do this and have them quote.

First step is (usually) polish the concrete bease material to be flat so that any equipment to be used can be properly levelled.

Second step is to identify relevant earthing points for the system.

Third step involves laying a conductive grid, connected to the earthing points.

Next comes the floor covering. (we used continuous "linoleum" style material.) The tiles need to be of the correct material, carbon impregnated to provide a DISSIPATIVE path to the conductive grid beneath. (I suspect there is some detail relating to the adhesives also.)

Next comes the polish and surface treatments for those floors. Wax polish and other "normal" materials are generally unsuitable as they create an insulating layer and detract all the good work done.

Yes, operators will need to wear dissipative straps and take some other precautions.

Chairs, tables, benches, and allother equipment must also be selected appropriately. (Imagine an operator sitting on top of a chair with insulating feet and working on a bench with insulated legs. Static can build on the surfaces and damage components.

as others have indicated, testing involves a relatively simple process of measuring the dissipative resistance to earth from various locations on the floor. Using individual tiles would probably require each tile being tested to confirm contact with the conductive underlay pattern. (Unless that special glue has some impact.)

Usually the people who sell the heel straps for operators will also stock the other components necessary (wrist straps for seated operators, equipment earthing devices, dissipative bench covers, ......) and will be able to advise suppliers for flooring.

Enjoy the challenge that you have ahead.
