No Audio ...

05/14/2011 11:59 PM

I have Window 7 Ultimate with Firefox 4 on my PC. Recently the audio problem developed intermittently with videos. Shutting down and restarting would restore the audio. Now the audio is definitely kaput. Have upgraded whatever is needed but to no avail. Any idea?... Thanks!

Try to localise if it is actually your computer audio or just your application audio. Does the computer make sound (eg- at startup, when you get mail, etc), if so then it could be your media player that is the problem.

Alternatively it could be a hardware problem, so try testing those powered speakers on something else (such as a stereo).

Have you upgraded your motherboard software?

Pierre,

I had a similar problem on XP a couple of years ago, but in my case it was the video that misbehaved.

I struggled with the problem for months before I downloaded a new set of codecs and installed them, replacing the original codecs - that fixed the problem -

In my case one of the codecs installed with Windows had become corrupted and no amount of updates made any difference and nor did any new player I downloaded because they all used the same corrupted windows codec.

Nothing within Windows detected that the codec was corrupted, and none of the updates changed the codecs.

You can find codec packs at Microsoft and elsewhere on the internet and they are free.

Regards

Bill

Before you do anything plug a set of headphones into the headphone jack, see if you have audio. Then pull it out. If your speakers start working then it is the headphone jack, they sometimes work loose and cause the main speakers to stop working. If they still do not work try plugging the headphones in, then slightly pulling it out and wiggling it. If you still get nothing then that does not rule out the headphone jack if you get no sound with headphones, or sadly, even if you do :).But the problem would more likely be with either drivers or a bad sound card.

I occasionally have loss of audio on my Windows XP computer. On the taskbar, I have a "sound effect" icon on which I double click to open the Sound Manager configuration menu, select the "Connector Sensing" tab the select "start connector sensing". Usually does the trick for me.

You may have something similar so it might be worth a try.

As far as I can tell, the cause of my problem is because the sound card & possibly some of the other components & connectors come loose, possibly through a mechanism known as chip creep. Resetting all the components sorts this problem out on a more permanent basis, until it needs doing again in a year or two's time.

Hope this helps.

I would like to thank all repliers. The updates did not help. I ended up purchasing an external audio card (SIIG USB SoundWave 7.1 Pro) that did the trick. It also boosted audio power to new heights. Yes, it was a $30.00 expense. However the problem is resolved at least for now!

For $30 bucks I would think the sound quality and fidelity would make the expense seem a lot less :)

Lack of audible output can be caused by any faulty link in the chain we call "PC Audio".

As Jack mentioned above, pinpointing the cause is crucial to curing the problem, so isolating the faulty link is often done by a process of elimination.

Some technicians prefer replacing the links one by one until they find the cure, some prefer a given known methods such as codec-pack replacement (to avoid specification-clash within the system) or similar, and are going through a set of such methods.

Anyway, the audio "chain" is made of the following "links", with each faulty link (or few such links) could be the cause:

1. The file containing the audio (written in a specific audio-format or version-protocol);

2. The codec for that specific audio format;

3. The application using that codec;

4. The driver for the given audio-card in the motherboard;

5. The audio handling section in the operating system (which "hosts" the audio-card driver);

6. The audio-card hardware on the motherboard (this is a piece of hardware which can be "fried" by excessive input voltage or current - for instance by connecting an amplified signal into the "In" "Aux" or "Mic" input);

7. The wires connecting the sound-card to an external amp, speakers, or phones;

8. The external amp, speakers, or phones, or their power-supply units;

See? - it could be a faulty stage in each (or more than one) of those

Yes Idea check all around devices and sound in control panel I have for instance IDT, Microsoft Windows, DivX, all with sound controls. Control Panel>Hardware_and_Sound>

manage audio devices start there checking Properties and Right Click "Show Disabled Devices" it just happened to Me I disabled a sound device then it was omitted from the list until I "Right Clicked" and found "Show Disabled Devices" and there it be.

Have a good One

Hope this solves Your Prob I know how frustrating settings can be when Your in a hurry or tired or both.
