Download Speed

05/16/2011 10:32 AM

I am in Vermont, USA using Wildblue satelite, Internet Explorer, computer with XP and g-mail for e-mail. Friends send interesting attachments to download but my download speeds run 40kbps -70kbps weekdays and 16kbps-40kbps nights and weekends. I've done all Wildblue diagnostics with their tech support and they claim they are giving me 300kbps-700kbps download capacity. I've had my computer checked by a MicroSoft certified shop and they said nothing is wrong with the computer. Could the problem be g-mail? Also, trying to use u-tube is frustrating with having to wait for the download to crawl ahead of the play bar. I tried Wildblue premium which promised 3M for about $80/mo but my speeds only went to 150kbps to 200kbps. I'm on social security so I went back to the $45/mo level. Is there a slow down choke point when opening attachments through g-mail? Are any of you CR4'ers with Wildblue getting the advertised 300-700kbps speeds? I'd appreciate suggestions. Charlie Hotchkin

I believe it's your ISP. A quick google search turns up a lot of the same complaints about them.

I also have very limited choices for internet. If you have a land line, I use AT&T. I can't say that they are the greatest, but, I do get the speeds that are advertised.

Kramarat, I also believe it is ISP (Wildblue) but they won't admit or fix it. My phone option is dial-up until company (Fair Point) runs new line or new equipment to provide DSL. Thanks for response, Charlie

Google them using the words "wildblue scam" and read some of the articles that pop up. You will see exactly what your problem is, and it is NOT with your equipment.

WJMFIRE, Scam articles about download speed are exactly what I experienced with Wildblue. My nephew lived with us and he signed up with Wildblue so he could play WarQuest. Frustrated with slow speed he bought a condo in the city with fiber optic. I inherited his equipment thinking my small usage would never go over my alloted bits. Never would I have guessed that a FCC licensed company could get away with such blatantly under contract performance. Thanks for the link. Reading others experiences lets me know I'm not crazy. In the EULA there is a caveat about download speeds...i.e., "up to". Wild Blue crams their local networks with users and it all bogs down. If they would upgrade their backbone their user's would be much more satisfied.
