Changeover Switch ATI 125

05/18/2011 12:42 AM

Hello

We have an olympian generator 80kVA connected to a changeover switch ATI 125. The problem is when utility power supply cut off, the generator do not start automatically, but when the generator is running and you switch off utility power suppy, the change over switch to generator automatically. Could any one help why the generator do not start when utility power supply cut off.

with regards

Mtonyole

dmtonyole; time delay on start! you don't want the generator to crank, for every little bump on the utility line, enough cranks you may run the cranking batteries dead. PC

Good point.

A possible refinement would be to let the generator start immediately on one grid interruption, but then block further restarts until a suitable battery recharging time has elapsed.

I'm uncertain about your question: was the system designed that way, and you're asking why, or was it not designed that way, and there is currently some problem that you're trying to diagnose?

As a (probably irrelevant) aside: When we had a situation that required continuous power and used a generator as backup, we had a UPS that switched in first to keep things going on a short term basis, then the generator started a little later. (But well before the batteries ran down.)

Hi

The system was not designed that way, i am trying to diagnose the problem of generator not starting automatically.

Based on your description it sounds like a problem with the:

1. Utility sensing relay/contact in the ATS for remote start enable.

2. Remote start circuit in the controller of the generator.

In my opinion, based on your statement that the ATS transfers the load while generator is running indicates one of the two items above (or both).

The generator remote start circuit is not sensing loss of normal utility power.

One additional item to check, when the generator is not running and your facility is operating on normal utility power and you open the normal power supply switch, does the ATS cycle to EM power but the generator does not start?

If this is the case, check items 1 and 2 above.

Hi

I have tried to replace the ATS with another one, the problem still persist. It might be remote start circuit on the generator's controller (power wizard 1.0) cause that problem i will try to check.

dmtonyole,

When you say "switch off the utility power supply", do you completely disconnect power from the entire building, or just open the breaker to the transfer switch? Is it possible that some device necessary to start the engine (a relay, control board, charger, etc.) is powered from the AC line? If so, your system would work fine during a simulated loss of power because that device is still energized. During an actual outage the device would lose power and cause the entire process to fail.

Operational tests must fully replicate the actual conditions expected during an outage to ensure that operation will occur as desired. In this case you may need to conduct the test after hours when you can disconnect the main service to the facility to get a realistic test.

Sounds like a simple wiring fault in the changeover switch,There should be a contact that "makes" when the switch has no power this in tern is connected to a relay that makes to the solenoid on the starter & powers up the Genny, so look along those lines. I'm sure the fault is simple to fix it's a case of being meticulous and checking each part.
