Good Answers - Just Curious?

05/19/2011 12:23 AM

I don`t know who to ask this of, but I`m sure someone will enlighten this old man. I have I think 69 post, but one good answer. I knew this could not be right, so I looked up every discussion I have invested in. I counted 12 good answers. My question is, how come under my picture it says only one good answer. I`m sure it is a glitch of some kind, and was wondering how to correct it. Thank you guys for all your input over these many months, and I hope to have many more. Bob KC0VEA

A post must receive two GA votes in order to be credited.

(And it can later be taken off if an OT vote occurs.)

OK Tornado, thank you for your answer. I don`t know what OT is, but I will take your word for it. It doesn`t really matter, I was just curious. I`m having too much fun to worry about it. Again, thank you. Bob KC0VEA

OT = Off Topic.

In the CR4 system, it is sort of the opposite to a GA (Good Answer).

Thank you Tornado, I should have known that. My mind is elsewhere. I had a 55 ft. break over communications tower stolen, and I was reporting it to local authorities, and the FCC and Homeland Security. The goverment offices are who I am regulated by, and they are who I answer too, but the locals could care less. I`m just not really thinking straight tonight. Again, thank you for your reply, at least I understand now.This tower was 44 sq.ft. at the bottom, very heavy metal. If they cut it up for scrap, someone made a pretty penny. Over 6 tons, too heavy to cart off. Some people will steel anything.

Wow, that's weird. I've heard of copper wiring or piping being stolen for resale to "recyclers," but not steel pieces. (Some thieves might not know the difference, though.)

Steel and cast iron are going right now for a all time record amount around here right now. In the last couple of days, I`ve has 2 mowers that you push come up missing. I also had 4 cattle panels come up missing. They were 16x4, about 60 dollars each. They were taken right out of my garden. I had 800.00 worth of aluminum tubing of various sizes come up missing. I build beam antennas from it.I had a pile of catalitic converters, about 30, and they are gone. They average about 75.00 each for the metal in them. I have a loop antenna made from 10 gauge stranded wire. It was 3700 ft long, strung in the trees around my 6 acres. Somebody cut and pulled down about 3000ft of it. I mounted security cameras, but they stole them also. Did not have the VCR hooked up. SOooooo.I`m locked and loaded!!

Maybe you could use some intimidating dogs as well.

I have 2 dogs now, but the only one they intimidate is me. They are worse than my grand children about wanting stuff for free. They have their own beds in their own bedroom also. I have to share my bedroom with Alvin the cat, and my wife. Sometimes life just ain`t fair.

Re: Just Curious??

For years, I never locked my doors or locked anything up. I bought this land, all wooded. I worked in my welding shop 12 hours, then come out here after work and cleared this land enough to put in a home. I stayed in a motor home here for 2 years. But we did it, and we never locked anything up. The only neighbors I had were deer and turkeys, . Then they started selling land around me to anybody that wanted it. No credit check, no nothing. On the internet no less. People from all walks of life, from New York to California showed up out here.500.00 a month for 9 years got you 2 acres of wooded land. I have seen a lot of people come and go, and their dreams with them.They had nothing when they got here, and no jobs after they got here, so they were ordered off by the sherif. More show up everyday, so now everything is nailed down that can be.

If only we had woodland like that in the UK...

Just about all the land is owned by the Royal family or the Church. (dunno who's got my share, and I won't inflict my views of either on you).

Some forest is owned by the 'Forestry Commission' which is funded by us tax payers...The government was trying to sell if off a while back, there was a huge public outcry and it was stopped.
Hope you can enjoy your life out there, sound a great place to make bows (my hoby... google 'delsbows' to see my stuff)

Del

I went to your web site Del, and it was impressive to say the least. I got into bow hunting a few years back, and I shot a deer. I was off my mark a little, and that poor animal screamed in anguish for a hour before I tracked her down. I have never hunted with a bow again. I still target shoot. My friends all use compound bows, with sights. I tried that, and I could hit nothing I aimed at. I got the sights off the bow, then started hitting everything I aimed at. We started playing tic-tac- toe for a dollar a shot. I won most of the time. It just amazes people that I shoot with out any visual aids, and hit what I shoot at consistenly. For me this is the only way to shoot. Have a good day Del, I know I will. Bob KC0VEA

It's not new, over 25 years ago I got a call that the power had gone off. Quick check of the OCB showed it had gone out on earth leakage. With it feeding an overhead line I decided to re-close it. It was night time so I didn't walk the line. To my surprise the OCB held, called the remote plant, still no power!

Come the morning we found out why, nearly a mile of the OH line was missing. The line passed under a bridge so they had dropped a chain over it opening the OCB. They then worked their way away from the feeder.

Tony, too bad your timing wasn't better at the time of re-closing the breaker

I'm sure you can get my meaning. I have a deep, deep disdain for thieves.

Who ever it was must have known something about the system. How did they know which way to work away from danger?

Even for 3½ miles of .01" bare copper I wouldn't risk it. It was an old line with a ½ core earth run on the poles. Just how the hell they got it away I don't know, there must have been quite a few of them as it was rough terrain.

If the line had gone out on O/L it would have blown the time lag fuses so the chain must have hit the earth conductor first to bring it out on E/L.

Would I be guilty of murder had I had closed the OCB quicker?

Not if I was on the jury .

Seriously though, as far as laws go here in the States, if you are injured during the commission of a crime, the liability laws are a bit more in favor of the law-abiding. Not sure about the liability laws there in the UK.

Generally speaking under Brit law;

If it could be shown you knew they were there - the charge would be murder

If you were responsible for checking they were not there - and failed to do so - likely manslaughter, or culpable negligence resulting in loss of life, or similar.

If neither of the above - no charges would apply - and the Coroner would most likely rule 'death by misadventure'
