Design Request - Low Cost Gas Cooker and Water Boiler

05/19/2011 5:20 AM

Hi

I live in South Africa and most people here would like to become energy efficient, "the rich and poor".

We also have many people who do not have access to electricity.I would like to design and manufacture a low cost gas stove - used for cooking and also a water heater attached to the stove (heat appromimately 15 litres of water) - like a low cost combi boiler system. Please assist with a safe gas water boiler design.

Regards

Hoosein

There was one of the relieve agencies that at one time or another was going through the African countries and showing the people how to make methane gas and a stove to go with it. A farmer could make enough gas to power cooking and hot water with just a few bit of live stock. Sorry can't remember which agency was doing this though. Might have been Peace Core or UNICEF. You could ask around there and see if you can locate plans.

I can sort of combine my comment with this one.

Google for "rocket stove". It is a stove at least partially aimed at use in third world countries, designed to make efficient use of its (solid) fuel. If you find some sites that talk about that, you'll almost surely find links to that agency that fixitorelse refers to.

I don't see why a gas stove couldn't be designed using some of the principles of the rocket stove.

Finally, to keep costs down, don't try to make a boiler (i.e., a pressure vessel), just heat the water in a suitable container with very wide openings in the top (or a loose fitting lid) to minimize the chance of any kind of steam "explosion". (And the need for design certification of a boiler vessel.)

Oh, here are some links (from my files--I haven't checked to make sure they still work:

Why not build solar cookers? Here is a site that has plans for building solar cookers out of many thing you can probably find locally. If your primary objective is building something for commerce, this may not be what you want. The beauty of these devices is they use NO electricity or gas !
