Windows 7 Printer Troubles

05/22/2011 7:59 AM

Hi guys... This may either be a very simple or stupidly complicated thing. I have installed Windows 7 onto my main desktop. I also have a server running Windows Server 08 R2, and multiple computers running XP pro SP3, all on my network. I also have a HP Deskjet 520 (retro, I know), which always worked seamlessly with XP, but 7 doesn't seem to support it. Because of this, I plugged it into one of the computers running XP, shared it and then hit the same problem obviously, and hence tried installing the HP Universal driver, which doesn't help either. The only method of printing from it that I can think of is to log onto the local computer each time and setting it to print that way, which is annoying... I have copied the DLL files from the XP installation, in hope of somehow integrating them to 7, as not even HP supply a driver for the printer due to it always being pre-installed. Does anyone have a solution which could work in order to let me print straight from 7, ideally having it plugged into a 7 computer rather than as a network printer?

Cheers

Bondy

Hi

The best solution for your problem is that the printer should be installed on the server machine having windows 08 R2. Steps are as follow.

1. Attach the printer on server machine having windows 08 R2.

2. Install the proper driver.

3. Check the status of the printer, go to control panel and then device manager, look for printer tab. Your printer name HP Deskjet 520 should be there.

4. Note the ip address of your server.

5. Go to your clients machines ( having xp and win 7) and install printer through control panel --> printers. In intallation process select network printer, and browes for your HP Deskjet 520 , using the ip you got in step 4.

Thats it.

Have fun.

Hi there,

The problem is that there is no printer driver which comes with Windows 7. It came with Windows XP, but has been discontinued since.

1. Be sure printer spooling services are enabled and running in each pc.

2. setup printer with shared properties are set in every pc.

3. each computer should have the printer device properties as shared and directed to the proper path of the shared printer location. i.e, c:\pcname\etc.\prn name\...

Since a local or lan driver does not exist for the printer, I would just cough up the 70 bucks for a new lexmark. Other option: write your own driver using the compatibility mode in Internet Explorer and print through a Java web printer interface.

Ah no, you've gotta love the 1980s equipment... That and ink cartridges are ridiculously cheap

Hi, Bondy,

Maybe I missed something here, if so I apologize, but have you considerred getting a dedicated print server for the Deskjet? They're not terribly expensive and should have drivers for Win 7.

I just plugged a hp 1200 all in one [10 years old] into my linux box & it is plug n play

HP drivers come with most variations

I use an old pc that cobbed together out of used parts to print & play music [a real stereo is plugged into it]

I use a remote desk top & control it with my main machine [notebook] from my living room or deck

I usually just email my self anything I want to print [& open it on the beater], no fuss, no muss
