Design Code for Small 0.44 Cu. Meter Chemical Tank

05/25/2011 7:07 AM

Dear All,

we have to design a small tank for methonal storage as follows

Capacity: 0.44 cu meter

Diameter: 750 mm

Height : 1000mm

Can any body tell me appropirate code for designing this kinda small tank. We have used API-650 but thickness calculated is very small as compared to API-650 minimum thickness of plate required i.e 5mm

Thanks for your help

Regards

What is the temperature range of the methanol?

Temperature is maximum 55C and pressure is atmospheric.

You can apply the rules of API 650, taking into consideration the corrosion allowance, and the min. shell wall thickness. May be the shell wall thickness 1/4 inch is sufficient.

Why does it have to be metal? What about plastics - polypropylene or polyethylene for instance?

Sounds like it's a storage tank at atmospheric pressure, presumably covered. I'd make it flat-bottomed, sitting on a concrete slab. 3mm thick stainless steel plenty thick enough.

Dear codemaster,

you are right, 3mm will be more than enough but the problem is we dont have any thumb rule or any strong reference to prove it. if we say api 650 then 3mm will not satisfy the code requirement and we cannot do FEA for such small tank. I am just looking for any equation or theory applicable to these kinds of small tank

You said "We have used API-650 but thickness calculated is very small" so presumably you have the equation. I agree with very small, I make it less than 0.05mm. I'm not familiar with API-650, but I'd be surprised if it has a minimum thickness 5mm for such a small tank. Most vessel specs leave the corrosion allowance up to the designer, and with SS can safely ignore it. If API-650 does say that it looks like you're stuck with it, unless you can find a different spec and persuade your client to accept it.

Cheers.......Codey
