Windows7

05/27/2011 3:46 AM

I was actually pleased with Windows 7... until the latest 'important' update to Internet explorer changed the screen layout for no good reason.
WHY???
Can't they update anything in a user transparent way?.. it seems they just can't resist moving the favourites button to the other side of the screen and hiding all the tools you use most.
Surely it's not beyond their wit to theave the damn thing alone once they have finally got it acceptable? Do you think they are maybe deliberately trying to alienate the end user?

Same a being pestered by Google to have google chrome or their fatuous tool bar... NO LEAVE ME ALONE!!!

Thanks for the warning. Since I don't use IE, I've been ignoring that update since it came out. My browser is tied into IE though, and I didn't want to take the risk.

From personal experience, and after reading some of the threads on here, I've decided, that if everything is working the way I want it to, I don't accept updates to any of my programs..............only the windows security updates. It's not just MS. Seems like all program updates are getting more and more sneaky and intrusive.

You should be able to remove that update and bring it back to where it was. In your search window, type in installed updates. It will bring up a list in the control panel of all updates you've installed. From there you can highlight it and uninstall it.

Ha yes but is the risk greater than the reward? I'll get used to it by the end of the week. Just for the record, my Son was equally irritated when it did the same to his laptop.
The annoying thing is I had ignored it first time, but it said it was 'important' and flagged it up later. Can't those SOBs differentiate between security and user interface?

Some of it may be security, who knows.............it's pretty darn big!!

Yeah, it's still occasionally reminding me that it's there, wanting to be installed.

Ms knows that people don't like change.....................but they've managed to make billions from constant changes.

Seems like the latest updates in the Linux world are going the same direction as MS- changing things for no practical reason, then releasing disfunctional systems- I am referring, of course, to the Gnome 3 shell and the Ubuntu Unity desktop.

If something works, why fix it? So some programmer, who is totally out of touch with how most people use their computers, can stay employed? i don't think I should have to spend hours on the new learning curve just so some programmer can feed his family this month...

it's also called "look busy to boss" . but we've to remember that all programmers are human beings. it's impossible to come out with a program so flawless that users would never have issues with it even in the first month of its release.

second, every revision, no matter how minor, is a programmer's output.

no output, no productivity. no productivity, no job.

major revision, major accomplishment. that means an upped version number. that drives programmers.

third, who still uses Windoze 3? it wasn't broke when they fixed it.

so updates are also driven by people who doesn't want to get caught with an app that is 2 revisions or just even 1 revision behind. you might want to call it, "keeping up with the gateses"

I may not still use Windows 3, but I most definitely still use Windows 98SE and Excel 2000 for some applications- they do things that I want to do much cleaner and faster than newer versions. And I don't have to re-learn the interfaces each time I sit down to the computer...

Hi, guys,

Not being a big fan of updates and their consequences, I make ghost images of my system every couple of months. With the ghost image, it's possible to 'travel back in time' to before the update and change the outcome.

One concern I have is that in doing all this time travel I'll screw up the timeline for the entire world...

The other concern is that, judging from this post, I seem to have watched way, way too many episodes of Star Trek...

Hi, Del,

That reminds me (speaking of working at the PC), if you'll PM me your e-mail address, I can send you a photocopy of an article that was published in our tribal newspaper. I'm an American Indian of Choctaw descent, and the article describes the traditional Choctaw bow making process, which appears to require a LOT of patience. Let me know if you are interested.

I haven't tried it since we got windows 7. but I did on the old XP... my favourites disappeared or moved or somesuch irritation, so I immediately uninstalled it.
I just don't understand why people insist on changing the user interface...
Maybe the next Ford will have the accelerator on a steering wheel mounted paddle and the brake pedal in the passenger footwell? (Mrs Cat would prob approve of the latter)

Re: Windows7

And that post worked almost as well as a laser pen ;o)

I agree - changing the user interface is just madness. I used to use LMS software a lot and with each upgrade they shuffled the menus. So after each upgrade I would allow 2-5 minutes to hunt for the option I wanted, and then I'd phone the helpline and ask them where it now resided. I took this approach after spending the best part of an hour working through the menus and not spotting it - they'd chnaged this one's name too....<sigh>

Last time I got a new PC at work I blocked out 2 days to get it set up...and it took that long as it was also a move for me from W97 to XP

It's not just Microsoft that does this. We use the Autodesk Inventor software & we have the latest updates because you generally get useful add-ons each time. With the latest update they have changed the user interface & removed the option to go back to the old version. Suddenly we are faced with a programme with all of the controls in strange places which will seriously reduce our efficiency until we become familiar with the new layout.

Re: Windows7

Just for the record, the Google blogs forum has just come back with an answer, apparently there is a 'compatibily setting' feature in the 'tools' which can solve the problem. Not sure if that's in the IE9 or the blogger and frankly I don't care as the 'uninstall' fixed the probs.
Ha, what about the 'enhanced security' you ask? I'd suggest that the most secure system is probably one which is more obsolete anyway!
What is the point of having fancy option whan they shouldn't be necessary and they are not publicised and you can't find 'em anyway.
I despair.
It's like Ford saying, "of course your car enging doesn't work on Wednesdays, you have to open up the dash board and set the Wednesday running enable switch... any fool knows that".
