Shaft For The Roller

05/28/2011 9:08 AM

This is in connection to the previous questions related to the sugar cane crusher/juicer

Should the shaft be bored through the roller/crusher of a sugar cane roller? OR should the whole(roller+its shaft) be made in one piece?

Which of the above two method is best from preventing the shaft from getting break or cracked during the crushing process?

Former should be better than the later, roller/crusher be bored through and shaft fitted into it. The duty expectation of the roller/crusher is to stand against corrosion and compression, whereas the shaft needs to stand against bending and twisting. Roller could be Stainless steel and shaft could be of high tensile steel. They could be connected by cotter pin, key or preferably saline joint.

Stainless Steel 316/316L is a Chromium-Nickel stainless steel with added molybdenum to increase corrosion resistance and mechanical properties. It is non-magnetic in the annealed condition and not hardenable by heat treatment.

But SS316F, have not come across. What for 'F' stands, , Food grade perhaps, just kidding...
