Copper Piping for Air Conditioner

05/30/2011 12:25 PM

Oh, just the other stupid question because I don't know about material application. My question for this is that why suppliers choose copper pipes for air conditioners? Is there any reason for this application? Is that the copper pipe is the most flexible? But, not only in air conditioner, the tubes inside heat exchangers are also copper. Why they don't choose stainless steel instead?

For one thing, copper transfers heat better. Copper can be formed into coils easier than stainless steel and cost is less.

Copper is a very good conductor of heat, and is used for this reason. It is also more flexible than stainless steel, which makes it easier to bend as necessary.

Aluminum is another common material in air conditioners, again for its heat conductivity. And, like copper, it is more flexible than stainless steel.

There are several places in an air conditioner where you want good heat conductivity (the condenser and evaporator coils).

And just another little tidbit, A/C copper differs slightly from normal tubing in its ID and OD making them non-interchangeable with eachothers fittings.
