If you don't have wi-fi at home, you really have two options. You did not say if you had "internet" at home.

Option 1.

If you do have internet, purchase a wireless router and connect it to your dsl or cable modem. You can then surf with any of the tablets available.

Option 2.

If you don't have internet, you will have to purchase a smart phone like an Android or I-Phone and pay for the monthly subscription for a data plan.

GA.

The costs here are such that it works out very expensive by mobile phone technology and not really fast enough (in the cheaper varieties) for films.

Option 1) of yours is by far the best method.

Try a google search for "Datawind ubisurfer". You get the device and various data plans at reasonable rates: I can't post a link because I only get UK results from here. Not sure which parts of the world they're available in.

".......or any other devices." The iPad needs to be connected to either a Mac with one of the latest OS's or a Windows PC also with a fairly recent OS in order to initialize it in the first place and then again to update its own OS. When connected, it will call up iTunes and check for any relevant updates, then it will automatically back-up the programs and data the up-date itself. Strange that it should have to be tethered to update and sync, but so it is. Even so, I love my iPad and it enables me to get so much more data and info from the net than when using my computer. BTW, make sure the router you get has the 802.11"n" for the best data transfer. Dual band at about 750 Mbits/sec. The Apple Air Port Extreme is expensive but connects easily and has a pretty good range around house or building.

Why not just get the 3g Ipad? It doesn't require wireless and you can use it anywhere.

There are some tablets out there that are Android OS and 3G enabled for under $400.

I'm using a 3G stick connected to a netcomm wireless device for my Ipad- works well for me also allows me to hook up the desktop (wired) and the laptops (wireless) at the same time. The better thing with the unit I've got, I can take it with me - or just unplug the stick and bung it into a laptop and go. IF you go this option make sure your stick and wireless device are compatible.

On a side issue - my Ipad will take a microsim - haven't gone that way because I'm not entirely happy with the price one has to pay for such a limited service. Does any one know of ANY apps that will convert the Ipad into a mobile phone? - -Yes I know its a bit big but I'm not that interested in size matters
