Two radically new concepts for one-way clutch have been patented. Both enable a move away from the wedging action of sprags and rollers thus increasing the clutch life but at the same time preserve high resolution (backlash similar to backlash in gears)and improve free-wheeling losses (similar to bearing losses). In one concept only gears are required. The other concept uses the principle of the Vernier caliper measuring instrument to reduce backlash and gravity / kinetic balancing design to reduce free-wheeling losses.
