Manually Selecting Which Network to Connect to Web in Multi-Network System

06/04/2011 9:30 PM

On my Windows 7 laptop I want to use two networks, one via Wifi, and one via Bluetooth. The local network (wifi) I connect to I use for printing, and has no internet access, where the bluetooth connection to my phone does. The problem is when both networks are connected at the same time, the laptop tries to use the wifi connection for the internet access (not present). Both connections work fine when used alone, but I lose internet access from the bluetooth as soon as the wifi connect comes on line. Manually

I've looked through the various settings on Windows, but found nothing of value.

Does someone know how to force the choice of internet connection away from the wifi when the bluetooth connection is present?

I have to sympathise with your situation. I cannot connect to the internet other than by phone. My laptop has a switch which allows me to select WiFi /Bluetooth or none. If your phone is a smart phone there should be a setting which would turn it into a WiFi hotspot. Alternatively connect your phone to the laptop via the use cable.

You are correct, I can use my phone as a hotspot. The problem with that is I have to switch from one network to another when I need to print. That's why I tried a PAN over bluetooth to try to eliminate the hassle.

The USB tethers I've used so far are I'm not impressed with, but that is an option of last resort. I like having the ability to move my phone to different areas of my house where the signal is better; I have limit signal at my house.

If you are using Internet Explorer, go to "Tools", "Internet Options" "Connections", there you can specify which connection it will try to use for internet. I'm not sure if that's going to be the answer to your problem, though. Most times, I think they probably assume the internet is going to be accessed via Ethernet, your situation of using Bluetooth is a bit out of the ordinary. A Google search might help.

I'm familiar with this window. It did not give me the option of modifying wifi, bluetooth, or PAN connections. They are not present to select.

I need to find someway of telling windows not to deactivate my working internet connection via my bluetooth tether (PAN) when my wifi connection comes on-line. Very annoying.

I've attempted to search a solution on the internet, but obvioulsy got no where. I will keep trying...
