Venturi Pumping System

06/07/2011 6:10 AM

Hi Guys,

I am wanting to make a venturi pumping system to transport materials ( sand and small stones) from point A to point B +/-30m horizontally. I have access to a 50mm diameter water pump - volume able to pump is 30 000 L per hour. The other pump is 100mm diameter, able to pump 95 000 L per hour. The smaller unit I was going to mount to agitate the sand. So the venturi would just need to transport the sand in suspension. Would like this to be carried out at high tide as the deposit area will be limited to the pipe end as tidal flow can be minimised.

I am looking to move / dredge the sand in a sea water enviroment. The canal system is fed by the sea water.

I do not need to breach the water surface as the sand shall be deposited at a point, and then excavated by hand at low tide.

many thanks

Your going to have to pay for this environmental monstrosity to be constructed, pay an engineer to design it! I hope you don't get environmental permission to go ahead and use it.

Sorry you've caught me on a bad day, but I won't change my views on coastal sand extraction.

Bad Day - is that your excuse, why not simply ignore the thread - guess you are in the same boat as the amazing "anonymous" thread - no guts no glory -

get out of the box and find out where the item is being used before passing judgement - would be good to have a moderator on this thread to view, wonder if he would endure your unfriendly comments

I see you are new to CR4, so welcome & some friendly advice.

"Flaming back" is not really productive. It will generally lead to more of the same and your OP (original post) will not be further discussed, or usefully contributed to.

It will simply devolve into a miasma of bickering.

You do however touch on a 'productive response' avenue in "find out where the item is being used" - though clearly it is your remit to provide this data - you have not.

Should you: the 'value' may be viewed as 'worth' the disruption. If so, you may find Tony is persuaded to either contribute, or be content to 'not escalate in response to your attitude'.

Additionally; if you were to outline what permits and remediation obligations you are acting under, rather than "I think I'll just go midnight pillage this ecosystem", again people may be more proactive.

I hope you will think about this alternate 'reasoned data based response' in future dialogue on CR4.

Point taken and digested many times - just posted a fair question looking for a fair reply - or that is how I see this. Straight forwardly I was looking for facts being on a engineering site, and clearly have been side swiped by the comments - being new is only part of the aspect in this form, and obviously don't take kindly to an uncalled for "bitch slap", I believe this is a professional website and respect this and the members - looking for common curticy

your point is noted! - thank you - regards

Venturi pumping is more art than science. Considering how cheap they are to purchase it makes no sense to reinvent the wheel and design one yourself.

There are multiple manufacturers of venturi eductors, following is a link to the one we use.

hi Delmar,

many thanks - simpler than first envisaged - did a similar venturi system over a dam wall many years ago and the system transported whole fish over with little to no side affects. The venturi used was driven by compressed air (250 CFM compressor) into 200mm pipe (I think). Needed to reduce the height of the dam (weir) wall.

Used in an enviromently FRIENDLY manner!!!

Many thanks for your help

Yes. They are not far from Fife and Forfar, and a long way from Six Mile Bottom.
