Vintage Tubes Sets

04/13/2007 10:50 AM

Hello,

Can someone direct me to a quality tube based hf radio kit company or equivalant. I cannot find one but I see that the parts are mostly still available. I want to build a regenerative tube set from scratch, receiver, transmitter, power supply, amplifier etc... The ARRL has some older hobby designs but I was hoping for something more substantial.

Thanks

Rick

I would suggest going to your local High Tech swap meet. We have them here in California where old techies get together sell junk and tell lies.

Try the alt rec amateur radio home bre and boat anchor news groups, the first deals with roll your own construction and the latter with older equipment that tends to be heavy thus the name boat anchors

Good luck

I do not know of very many tube kits out there anymore. However, for parts and military surplus to convert and also as a source of parts, try Fair Radio Sales in Lima Ohio.

I saw something about a home built regenerative radio set recently. As I recall, it was a kit from a Japanese company and the instructions were in Japanese, but the pictures were adequate. The article had some video of the assembly and a demo of the controls and the reception.

A regenerative radio might be VERY hard to find. They were built prior to the second world war (or earlier) but were replaced with superhetrodyne types since then. If you insist on regen, you may end up doing it from scratch, but the others have given some good ideas for starting places.

Good Luck

Thank you and everyone else who has responded to my inquiry. I have found some information regarding this subject and some kits from www.tubesandmore.com as well as the ARRL. I want to build a "modernized" regen tube set mostly for the quest for knowledge and the nostalgia. plus it would look awesome...

thanks again

Yes, the regenerative radio easily became a transmitter when adjusting the "tickler" coil for maximum signal gain. And for that reason they were history by the mid 1920's. An RCA Radiola IIIA comes to mind; a good one to play with but the WD11 tubes are rare. I once collected and restored old radios and televisions. I doubt if you'll find a regenerative radio kit ... can't recall ever one being offered. Maybe a TRF receiver or super-heterodyne kit is still available.
