Protective Coating on SS 310S Tank

06/07/2011 6:43 PM

Hi Guys,

Can you suggest me what protective coating (on external surface) we can use on SS 310S Tank? We are using Sulphuric Acid at 30 deg C at atmospheric pressure.

Thanks,

Salman

Contact these people. I'm a little behind on the very latest coatings systems, but I've used their industrial coatings. They should have something that will work well. They are large enough that they should have a location somewhere near you.

Not sure you will find an answer here but might help:

Sulfuric acid is pretty aggressive - good luck.

What concentration?

(It's a good idea to quote the concentration as the sulpuric acid/steels system behaved differently depending on concentration.)

Is there a containment problem at the facility that needs to be addressed instead?

The concentration is 99% and I just wanted to know what coating we can apply on external surface. Previously, it was insulated because we were dealing with hot sulphuric acid but we have changed the process and now it's at ambient temp. As we are pulling out the lagging, I wana check what coating we should apply on surface to avoid corrosion, do we need it?

At that temperature and pressure have you considered a polyolefin tank?

If a 99% acid is not corroding the inside, what is going to corrode the outside?? SS310 is high chromium, and should be just fine bare.

I agree. Any paint will eventually fail and need to be maintained. I'd leave it alone.

I was thinking it may have been for aesthetic reasons. If that was the case, there are products that would work.

A few questions: What is the size of the tank? Can the tank be transported for coating or does it have to be coated on-site? If the tank is transportable, then it may be a candidate for a Fluoropolymer coating such as HALAR ECTFE which has excellent resistance to Sulfuric Acid at the conditions you mentioned. This is a multiple coat multiple bake coating process and therefore needs to be sent to an applicator versed in its application. Typical application thickness is about 30 mils per side. Southwest Impreglon Inc. in Houston, Texas is one applicator for these types of coatings if the tank is transportable and fits into their ovens.

Absolutely no need to worry, you can leave it without any coating on SS 310S.

...provided there is no water ingress to the <...99%...sulphuric acid...at ambient temp...> that might lower the concentration!
