PVElite 2011-Conical Head-With a Knuckle-ASME Sec VIII Div:01

06/11/2011 1:37 PM

I am designing a Pressure vessel having a conical head with a transition knuckle.

The vessel is subjected to internal pressure of 2 bar and external pressure of full vacuum.

1st value: Pvelite software while performing internal pressure calculations for the conical head calculates the value of thickness required for the knuckle portion as per Appendix 1-4(f) of ASME section VIII Div:01.

The software also gives 2nd value of thickness. It gives ref to UG-33 (f)

After it choses the maximum of two and gives the answer.

My question: where does the second value come from??

For those of us who don't have a copy of the Code at hand, it would help to have a brief quotation from the relevant sections.

You are kindly requested to get a hard/soft copy of ASME code, Sec. VIII, Div.1 and refer to Para. UG-33 (f) and look the scenarios and steps of calculations.

Sometimes there are a pressure vessels intended to be designed under external pressure (pressure on convex side, such as design due to condition of full vacuum FV as tabulated at vessel datasheet), in addition to the internal pressure (pressure on concave side).

In this case, the usual procedure as per ASME code is to proceed both calculations (due to internal and external pressures) and select the max. wall thickness. And ASME UG-33 (f) is required for conical heads when the vessel is subjected to external pressure (convex side).

It seemed that the OP's pressure was on the concave side, unless the toriconical heads were turned inward.
