Electronic Ballast

i use philips electronic ballast FBA-228ULC specification as follows :- Pin- 62W, Vin- 230V, Iin- 0.28A and lamp type- T5 2x28W, My question is that if i use single 28W tube instead of using two 28W tubes with this ballast (which is designed for 2x28W tubes) what would be the effect on the performance and life of tube? is it working fine or get struck after some time? and what would be the modification required if i want to use same ballast only with single tube for better performance?

Nothing, except a short life expectancy (say 1000 hours, for an expectancy of 5000 hours. Ballast has to work with only 1 tube. Brilliance of the sole tube may decrease (in accordance with a shortest life expectancy). Thousands of dual type work with a tube blow out, usually ( abnormal use, however).

There is a good chance the circuit will not strike as the electronic ballast does not have 2 separate circuits and so requires the second lamp to be in circuit.

Another thing to be aware of is the fact that most electronic ballasts today have end of life circuits which sense when a lamp is missing or about to fail etc.

The single tube works normally.The voltage required for initial discharge is attained and after the discharge the ballast is short circuted.

It all depends on how the ballast circuit was constructed. Generally it will provide a little too much power to a single lamp if it was intended for two lamps.

The reason for the ballast is to prevent a current run-away effect causing so much current to flow that the glass to metal seal would burst from rapid expansion as the metal conductor over heated. I've achieved this. It takes some effort and a powerful supply.
