Re-Paint to White Over Powder Coat Blue

06/20/2011 9:14 AM

I need help for recommendation of re-painting my product in to white color which now my product already blue powder coat. Below is some detail of my product.

1. size 600mm diameter with about 4meter long.

2. base material is aluminum

3. already powder coat "blue"

4. can't use baking process because product can't with stand temperature over 120C.

5. new color has to be last 10 years in outdoor condition.

Any suggestion?

Hard to recommend a product not knowing what the blue finish is!

Scratch it up. Clean it up. And paint it with this. They will tell you which product. Much like aspirin has become a household word, Tnemec has become synonymous with long lasting paint. This is an unpaid endorsement. When I know something works, I'm happy to spread the word.

I'm guessing a modified polyurethane. Epoxy will last, but it will chalk up within a year.

Agreed. Just bought a gallon of the paint you recommend to paint some green light standards in my town.

Including thinner, catalyst and a reducer(I think)the cost was $160.00USD/gallon.

But, it's good stuff.

Did you get sun burned?

Almost.

I've got a little story to tell about Tnemec.

I was running a job in Columbia, SC. I wasn't using Tnemec on my job, but one night I was drinking heavily, poolside, at the apartment complex.......................I think it was about 1986.

There was another contractor there, (also drinking), that was installing the giant skylights on a new shopping mall.

He walked up to me, introduced himself, and said he needed the structure painted on one of these skylights......................could I do it?

Maybe, I replied..................How much money are we talking about?

$1200 cash. Everything is rigged, paint is on the job, spray machine is sitting there.

Well, this was a Friday night, and my weekends are important, but, WTF, I'll do it in the morning.

Killed it in 3 hours. To this day, it's the most/easiest money I've ever made.

So, how the hell does Tnemec fit in this cute story?

I thought you'd never ask.

In my exuberance, I ran to the mall the next morning, still a little drunk, and sure enough, it was Tnemec. I sprayed the sh*t out of that thing, and was back at the pool by noon...................I only forgot one thing...........................to cover my head.

I wore a bright white Tnemec helmet for over a month, (yeah, it used to be my hair). It lasted a lot longer than the money.

Yes, work is the curse of the drinking class. Or, something like that.

The only way to get paint out of hair is to cut it out.

Or wear it out.

I like good paint. People would ask me, "What's wrong with you?"

My response was always the same........................"Nothing. Why?"

Sorry if I'm sounding goofy. I've been alcohol free for a solid week, trapped on a houseboat with religious zealots. Let's just say I've been curled up in the fetal position in the darkest recesses of my mind for seven days. I actually missed Roger.

Don't get me wrong..................I'm one of them. But, for me, it's personal. I don't like people particularly. And I damned sure don't ever feel the need to hold hands and sing.

Taking today off to catch up on my medication.

I Forgot you took the inlaws on these outings. You're a better man than I am.

After my vacations, I usually take a day off to dry out.

Kramarat,

"Sorry if I'm sounding goofy. I've been alcohol free for a solid week, trapped on a houseboat with religious zealots. Let's just say I've been curled up in the fetal position in the darkest recesses of my mind for seven days".

I truly feel your pain brother

I have on occasion found myself in similar circumstances (inlaws) and in the fecal fetal position also.

Get well soon!!!!!!!!

Best wishes - KJK/USA

Thanks KJK. I'm starting to feel better. I wonder how many beers it takes to make it stop.

Unless you plan to strip the powder coating, the base material doesn't matter.

You won't need a primer, either. Sand, clean, paint.

Just use a quality paint. Acrylic paint would probably be OK, but if durability is needed, you might want to pay the extra money and go with an oil based paint.

You could also go with a urethane/catalyst system like they use on cars now. None of these require baking near 120C

Being powder coated it should be a good hard surface & will have been baked already,so if you break the glaze,(lightly rub with wet or dry) you could the apply a two pack paint strait on top, with the powder coat acting as a base coat you should get a really good Finnish, being two pack will dry hard in ambient temperatures, the only drawback is you have to spray it & it has a short pot life once mixed.

Specify the color before they powder-coat the product.
