All different, there are also many, many different versions, each one more expensive than the last. Plus you'll need a "service" agreement because its so convoluted.

Stay away from RS if you can.

That does make it more difficult.

It may be cheaper to replace the PLC rather than buy the software.

I like OMRON stuff myself, especially for stand alone applications. It's cheap, all the different components are integrated with each other and it's powerful.

We joke you only get to rent Rockwell Software.

The ControlLogix platform is incredibly powerful, but the programming environment is convoluted. It requires RSLogix 5000 sw, with 21 flavours. If Rockwell programs it they ensure only their trained service technician can understand it. They seem to have forgotten about simple ladder logic and abuse or ignore the power of function block programming.

OK, I am ranting.

With only 2 machines here using AB PLC - and no experienced technicians around - it makes very much sense to me to switch to another brand of PLC. Thanks for the suggestion. Especially as we will never use the 'incredible powerful features' of ControlLogix (we don't even have an idea about what these features are....:-))..hahhaha). If we call RSLogic similar to Microsoft Windows, is there something available which is really 'generic' - call it 'Linux'? And will it be possible to convert current program to new software?

Thanks a lot for any input on this!

wow! Feel the hate. LOL I guess I'm wierd because I find the Rockwell software some of the easier PLC software to use and I have had to use a bunch (AB, Siemens, Omron, Panasonic, Mitsubishi, Automation Direct). I don't argue that it's very expensive and tech support agreements are outrageous but so are some of the others.

To add something useful to this thread:

PLC5 - RSLogix 5

SLC500, Micrologix - RSLogix 500

ControlLogix, CompactLogix - RSLogix 5000

Also I believe they offer a maintenance version of the software where you can look at the logic and make small changes but it doesn't allow you to do "larger" changes such as add subroutines or tasks. The intent is for plant maintenance personnel, maybe this would be enough for you.

Hi Shawn,

I have used a couple of different Ladder Logic programs. The RSLogix was, as I recall, rather cumbersome - loads of functionality, most of which you will never use.

My favorite was HornerAPGs CScape that is free and very easy to use.

You did add something useful to this thread, so GA.

GA from me also. Your post is the only one here that actually answers the OP's question.

I also agree with you that the programming interface for RSLogix is about as easy as it can be. I can troubleshoot, navigate, and edit programs with RSLogix far more quickly and easily than with GE-Fanuc, Automation Direct, or Siemens. I'll add that AB has taken a bit of a lead in moving away from serial interfaces. Especially with their MicroLogix PLCs that can be purchased with an EtherNet Port for under $1000US. Forward thinking designers should not underestimate the significance of this.

On the downside, the expensive support contract makes you feel like you have to purchase the software again every year.
