Help! Leaf Cutter Ants

06/29/2011 11:22 AM

Yes, it's me again... and I'm still fighting the ants.

This time I have a specific species that needs to be stopped, and as I'm sure you read the title you already know they are leaf cutters.

I am commencing a web search now, but before I go fill my head with 'facts' from the web I wanted to ask if anyone here has any 'expert' advice or general info that may be of help.

I tried tracking them last night but they are cutting up in a plumeria (sp?) tree and heading into a LARGE bougainvillea. I have only been able to track them as far as the plumeria bougainvillae border and have found no trace of them on the ground... I am thinking they are in the bougainvillae...

Need tactical support. S.O.S. Mayday Mayday...

Current plan is to spray the area with a borax sugar solution, after that I will be turning to nasty stuff unless you can tell me something better.

I suppose I should clarify for those who didn't follow my previous thread...

I am in Cozumel, so any solutions you may have for me need to be available in a small tourist community on an island in Mexico... And most of our water is from the wells on the property, so I want to avoid anything toxic that may seep into my well water if at all possible.

Barriers are not going to be effective as there is too much vegetation here for me to protect, it simply is not practical. I need to kill the colony.

Did you really expect to move down here and not deal with insects? Man good luck on your new full time job of battling every creepy crawler you can imagine, and some you cant. Here in Tabasco I have tried to limit my recourse to the ones that sting me or make me itch, the plants quickly grow back in a tropical climate so I save my ammunition.

Possibly just a Borax border around your place, forget the sugar. Or..... buy an Anteater or two .

I knew I would have fun with the creepies and the crawlies down here, so far I've managed to maintain a sort of non-aggression pact with most of the ants, but the leaf cutters and the ants I've had in the bird enclosure here need dealing with... I am caretaking a Bed and Breakfast for the summer, and would prefer not to turn over a half eaten garden when the owners return... Though apparently their last leaf cutter infestation took something like 7 years to eradicate... so if I'm gonna lose at least I only have to make it till November, but I'm not going out without a fight.
