MCB Burn Out Problems in India

06/30/2011 2:10 PM

Dear All

I am trying to obtain info regarding possible problems with mcb's in India supplied between about March 2007 onwards . If anyone has seen problems with MCB's burning out or even causing fires when there is no obvious explanation other than an mcb fault , I would be very grateful to hear .

Details such as make , rating , circs of failure would be useful.

This is of course mainly directed to electricians ,distributors etc (although any householders with knowledge also welcome!)

Any info gratefully received

regards

I would think that any information you get in here, or any "anonymous" internet forum, is going to be pretty much worthless. What's to stop an unscrupulous respondent working for one mfr from posting bogus information about a competitor's product just to damage them?

Most MCB heat failures in practice are caused by loose connections between the MCB terminals and the customers wiring, hence a customer installation or inadequate maintenance program (tightning up loosening MCB connections over time, not following the maintenance procedures as set out by the manufacturer). The rest are caused by incorrect use and application (MCBs not used in the correct way or in an environment they are not designed for resulting in premature failure), again a customer problem.

Very few problems can be attributed to actual MCB design or manufacturing quality failures.

Can you prove the MCBs are faulty? Are the MCBs in fact counterfit copies of brands that have been designed and tested to the applicable electrical standards? Are they generic unbranded devices with no real approvals and hence should not have been used in the first place.

Something to think about.

I have encountered with 258413582584 nos of MCB failures ranging from 5 to 500 Amp, make Electromaster since March 2007. All were burnt causing fire during switching on, but no reason could be explained.

258 billion failures? That's pretty high.

There's been a fair bit of publicity in the UK about counterfeit mcb's (and cables) on the market here. It is felt that these have been coming in from China. All the ones found and tested had serious problems many along the lines as you describe.

I would check that they really are from the manufacturer they are marked as. There is a fair bit of info on the web (esp UK sites) on how to do this.

Hi bro, You got to mention about where was the MCB burning, whether it was in a MCB Box, kWh meter box or Metal Panel etc. Casing of the Good MCB is usually made from the fire retardant materials so loosing connection, overloaded or short circuit in which make it over heated seldom to cause fire. Instead those PVC of cable insulations or the low quality plastic made terminals that usually burning first & causes fires most of the time...so check it out & make sure that the fire was coming from MCB or others. Cheers
