Where To Purchase a New X-Ray Diffractometer?

07/01/2011 2:28 PM

Im working with my geology professor at school and we are collecting unknown rock and mineral samples from all around the country, some donated for our research and others we dug locally ourselves. In order to identify the compositions of our samples we use an X-Ray Diffractometer (XRD) both in our lab class and for our research. The current model we have is terrible, so I am in charge of getting quotes for the new one. Because this is my first time, does anyone have any suggestion as to which company to go to? The only specifications I really have is a 2-theta goniometer for powder analysis. Thanks for any help.

If it were me I'd:

1. Do a Bing search on x-ray diffractometer, then go to the websites of the manufacturers or U.S. distributors.

2. Read the on-line literature provided.

3. Go to a conference or trade show where this equipment is on display and talk to the sales reps at their booths. (If possible.)

4. Visit the manufacturers (if my professor has travel funds) or have the manufacturers' marketing folks visit our lab, to discuss the operation of the device, its features, options, maintenance, etc., and ask the manufacturers for a list of labs that use their x-ray diffractometer, along with the contact persons at the labs.

5. I'd call those labs to find out their level of satisfaction. If possible, visit those labs to get some hands-on experience.

6. Get quotes and review the quotes with my professor along with what I've learned from the search process.

7. Make my recommendation to my professor.

Bruker, Rigaku, Oxford Instruments, Scintag, Phillips, Inel, Agilent and Shimadzu all manufacture powder XRD systems and have offices in most countries. There are also a number of companies that do retrofits, refurbishments and automation of old manual XRD systems. You will need to research these yourself. If you are in the USA, you might visit the world-renown Denver X-ray Conference. I once gave a presentation there on XRF systems for analysing moving samples in about 1992. It was met with almost complete silence at the end. A man in the front row was snoring. Good luck!
