Motor HP Selection for a Belt Conveyor

04/16/2007 2:58 AM

How to calculate the hp of a motor to drive a belt conveyor? What are the factors that affect the selection of driving mechanism?

One of them is the rate of change of potential energy of the material being transported, the other is friction.

Please refer to CEMA handbook (or IS code no: 11592, if I am not mistaken)

What is the application?

For flat conveyors used to move packages, there's one calculation.

For troughing conveyors used to move aggregate, there's another.

Also the width of the belt, the angle of incline, the loading of the belt, the type of belting material, the speed...

It's all in the details.

The application is edible sodium chloride salt.

Its a troughing belt conveyor.

Edible salt in a troughing belt conveyor.

Salt can have a maximum 20 degree incline.

I'll assume a 36" wide belt going 350 feet per minute, which could move approximately 700 tons per hour.

Level, each 100 ft will require approx. 7.5 hp.

To lift each 50 feet will require approx. 35 hp.
