07/04/2011 1:07 PM

What are the main energy conversions (or energy transfers) that occur in a coal fired electricity generator?

It used to be quite complex, but now days modern clean coal power plants directly convert coal to electricity in one step through the use of 'magic'!

Pollution byproducts are still present as a result of the conversion process, but these are now called 'dark magic'.

Have you tried a wikipedia search, as this really sounds like homework (and this is not a homework cheat site).

I'm thinking of five of them (or maybe four if two of them are considered as combined.)

You were asked this question so you would carefully think through the various processes and so learn something. Asking someone else to do this work defeats the purpose.

If you do some research, try to list all the operations involved, then ask CR4 for comments you may get some civil answers.

Coal + O2 + Heat = CO2 + More Heat → H2O makes steam → tubine = reduces heat → applies torque to shaft → shaft spins big magnetic field inside coil → electricity.

Rather simple really.

OP said energy conversions (or energy transfers)

I can list out at least 50 places. But the list will be extensive.

Each question in the eye of the beholder. Certainly not very well specified.

It is if you imagine it in the context of question in a test or exam paper (which is what I believe it to be given the available information).
